Lennon: No, not really. But I will eventually.
Lennon: Anyway, are you going to tell me why you're freaking out?
Me: Well, it's mostly because things have changed. These songs are unlike anything I've written before, so what if nobody likes them? What if the fans hate them?
Lennon: And what if they love them?
Me: I dunno. They're very different.
Lennon: Are you more afraid of them not liking the songs or not liking you?
Me: Wow, you're good.
Me: It's a little bit of both, I guess.
Me: I mean … I’m going to be forty this year, right? And I’m just worried I’m wasting too much time on beating a dead horse. Maybe the whole point to that accident and everything that happened after was just to be a huge wake-up call from the universe for me to give up and move on.
Lennon: Okay, I'm going to give you some advice.
Lennon: Live your life like the only opinion that matters is yours.
Me: You say that like my entire career wasn't built on the opinions of others.
Me: If people hadn’t liked my music, I wouldn't have been where I was.
Lennon: Where you ARE.
Me: I’m not there anymore, Lennon.
Lennon: But you haven't lost anything. You think you have because you're physically not the same as you were, but you're still you. Your talent and soul are the same as they always were. The sooner you realize that, the better off you'll be.
Me: I don't know about that.
Lennon: I do.
Me: Whatever you say.
Lennon: You're lucky in a way. You're already established. Your true fans haven't gone anywhere, and you might even gain some new ones. They'll see you as an inspiration.
Me: Fuck that.
Me: I'm not an inspiration.
Me: I'm the asshole who went speeding through a thunderstorm, hydroplaned, and lost his fucking leg. There's nothing inspirational about that.
Lennon: But you kept going.
Me: Yeah, okay.
Lennon: Don't pull an attitude with me, Dylan. You asked for my advice. I gave it to you.
Me: Do you think you're an inspiration?
Lennon: God, no.
Me: But you inspired me.
Lennon: LOL, I don't want to be your inspiration. Not until I do something worth inspiring.
