Living on Earth must have been horrible when Lucian was alive, back when there were many other royals. Amythia had been the only vampire royal left during the war on Earth that took my life, and she had created sheer havoc.

For Lucian to have killed three of them . . . Wow! Just how powerful was he?

“Do you miss it? Earth?”

"My time on Earth was short. I don't think of my past often, and there are things I can't even remember about it now. I've lived in the God Realm far longer than I did on Earth."

That made sense. In time, I'd feel the same. A few years on Earth would eventually be nothing compared to decades and centuries living here.

"I've been here less than a week, and I can't say it's been great. Not horrible, but not great." I found myself admitting. "I hadn’t realized until I got here how different the war on Earth had made me. I had a purpose there, first as an Enchanted helping my pack, and then during the war itself, guiding Ruby and the others.” I paused and let out a deep breath. It felt good to get this out in the open.

“It’s been hard to be here with nothing to do. I’m not used to that, and adjusting hasn’t been easy. I’ve been trying to look at it another way, that this is my time to experience independence, to finally have time for myself. Now I just need to find a job and—"

“A job?” Lucian repeated, cutting me off. “We don’t call the things we do daily ‘jobs.’ Let me guess someone born in the God Realm explained it to you? They don’t understand how jobs work on Earth.”

“Wait, I’m completely lost,” I told him. “So I don’t have to work?”

“You don’t have to work to survive here, no. But you do need to do something that fulfills you. When the God Realm was initially created—and this is before even I arrived—souls just did whatever they wanted to do when they got here. At first, they loved it, and the magic and technology of the realm took care of all of their needs. But before long, the souls grew bored and restless. Without a reason to get up in the morning, they became depressed—some very deeply. In a bid to give the souls’ afterlife meaning, the Gods pulled back on the magic and technology and allowed them to choose something they would be responsible for, something they wanted to do for the good of everyone here that they also enjoyed. We sometimes refer to it as our ‘soul purpose.’

Everyone in the God Realm has a soul purpose now, or they do after they’ve been here few months. The $5000 credit you get monthly is an allowance that will be given to you regardless of whether you contribute or not. As you know, it’s what you use as payment for services and goods, but you’ll probably find that it’s more than you could ever spend in a month.”

“Oh,” I drawled, finally understanding. Suddenly, I felt less pressure. However, I still needed to figure out what my purpose was here. Hopefully, something would present itself to me soon. “That’s actually pretty amazing. Earth could learn a thing or two from this place.”

“Well, to be fair, they don’t have the kind of magic and technology that we have here,” he said. “But I agree in theory. There was a lot of disparity between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’ in my time, and I doubt it’s any better there now. Some people suffer while others have more than they could ever need. Thankfully, no one has to suffer in their afterlife. Homes are provided for everyone. And the malls and restaurants are simply just a means of entertainment, not intended to suck away one’s earnings. The credits you get go back to the collective system, so no one ends up with less than another.”

I was speechless.

“The only thing we have here that can be bothersome are the Supremes, who sometimes behave like the politicians of your time. The more followers a god has, the more power they command. It’s a constant competition around here. They’ll do anything to increase their popularity among the souls here, and they can go a little overboard in the process.”

“That sounds a lot like the ‘influencers’ on social media,” I murmured and he made a face.

“What’s social media?”

“Nothing,” I said. “So if the gods are like modern day politicians, I guess I shouldn’t expect sincerity from them.”

Lucian snorted. “Gods are selfish beings. Some of them like to pretend that humans and supernaturals are beneath them, but without us, they wouldn’t exist.” He shook his head. “It’s not perfect here, but it’s home. You said being here wasn’t easy at first for you. What about now?”

I looked at him. “It’s getting better, slowly. Thankfully, I have Rehema now.” I chuckled as he hummed his response. "And you, I suppose."

“You suppose, huh?”

"Yes. I might be your mate, but there’s a lot we don’t know about each other. For example, I would love to know whose ring you have around your neck.”

I peeked over my shoulder as he looked down at the necklace hidden under his shirt, its chain visible around his neck. As we walked by a torch, its flame flickered, casting shadows across his face. There was a flash of sadness in his eyes. But when he looked up at me, the emotion was gone, replaced by a playful twinkle.

“There is no need for jealousy, as adorable as it is.”

I stopped walking. “Excuse me? Listen, mister, I’ll have you know that jealousy and curiosity are two very different things.”

"I didn’t mean to offend you," he replied. When I growled at him and continued walking faster than before, he called out, "Seriously, I apologize. I thought I was being funny."

"Sure," I grumbled.

We came to a crossroads but continued to walk straight ahead, although I was tempted to vere off toward the sound of rushing water coming from the corridor to the right.

Finally, the corridor came to an end, and we stepped into a circular room carved into the stone. Torches lined the walls, and at the center of the room sat a large circular mirror. But instead of standing upright, it was hovering off the ground, reflecting the ceiling.

Lucian stopped at the entrance, and I looked up at him. "Where is she?"
