Rumir, the Moon Goddess's son, was my mate. But what else was he?

I couldn’t look away from his scaly arm, but his eyes were just as intriguing. Was he a hybrid, part dragon, part god?

Regardless, I needed to figure out what the hell was going on. The irony wasn’t lost on me that on earth, I couldn’t find a mate. And now I had two. Two! And one wasn’t even a wolf!

The entire ballroom had gone silent, all eyes on us. I didn’t know what to say. No matter how many times the words ‘I have two mates’ went through my mind, I couldn't believe it.

Even if he and Lucian were still walking circles around each other, both releasing murderous intent.

“Why?” Rumir growled, and lightning struck across the sky above us all. Electricity danced across the blade of his sword, and three gods pushed through the crowd. As he turned his back, I noticed the tattoo of another sword with the hilt on his left shoulder, its tip pointing to his right hip. “Why would my mother do this?”

"Ask your mother yourself. But Natalie arrived with me, and she's leaving with me."

Lucian’s words left no room for debate, but Rumir clearly had no intention of backing down. Rumir growled at one of the gods who stepped forward, and the man thought twice about interfering.

"You can't be satisfied with having all my mother's favor, so you decide to steal my mate as well?" Rumir swung his sword, readying himself to fight.

What was he talking about? Lucian had briefly mentioned that the Goddess had a son, but he’d said nothing about there being bad blood between them.

“She can’t be your mate, Rumir. You’re not a wolf,” Lucian’s body seemed to harden before my eyes, and white fur began to sprout from his face as his shoulder dislocated.

I looked around. No one was making any attempt to intervene. Then again, this was a god and the first creation of a goddess. Who could stop this?

These men were about to rip the castle apart and ruin this ball for everyone because of me. I couldn’t let that happen. And worse, they were behaving as if I wasn't here. And I couldn’t have that. But what to do? It was all happening much too quickly.

“Stop, stop this now!” I yelled, and Lucian stilled as he looked at me. Rumir, however, took advantage of the opportunity and swung his sword.

Lucian's mouth fell open, a ground-shaking roar leaving his lips as he released a pulse of energy that pushed everyone back. He was a monster ready to defend his mate to death. But before Rumir’s sword could descend, a hand appeared and grabbed it by its blade.

The electricity on the weapon was absorbed by the unknown god, and Elinor tightened her hold on my arm.

"That's enough!" The god's voice was resounding, and I eyed the six black horns he wore on his head like a crown. His golden eyes narrowed. “What’s the meaning of this, Rumir?”

Rumir didn’t respond but kept staring at Lucian with hatred. No, this wasn’t just about me. The hatred in their eyes was deep-rooted, something that had existed between them long before now.

But what had happened for the Goddess’s son and her favorite creation to hate each other so?

And now I’m their mate!

My eyes began to blur as the god released the sword and turned to Lucian. I held my head, my eyes changing to white as a vision took hold of me.

Not now!

But there was no stopping it, and the world around me was pushed aside, giving way to a cloudless black sky. I was falling, plummeting to my death. My body began to tremble as a chorus of screams echoed around me, and I reached up to cover my ears from the deafening shrieks of a thousand different supernaturals.

I gritted my teeth, my body ice-cold, as I fell into a sea of red goo. The thick substance latched onto my limbs and my face like tentacles, pulling me under. I tried to scream, but no sound left my lips. I looked from side to side and found several bodies also completely submerged in the liquid.

When I tried to call out to them, the substance slipped into my mouth, choking me and covering my face until I only had one eye left to see the sky above me turn as crimson as blood.

White-hot anger consumed me, and horrendous thoughts and images filled my mind. I saw myself kneeling over Rehema’s mangled body, my face and hands covered in her blood, her flesh falling from my lips. My eyes were red, my smile wide and sinister.

And it wasn’t just an image in my mind. I could taste blood on my tongue and wanted to vomit, but another part of me felt pleasure at the carnage.

An urge to kill anything in sight filled me. Hatred and malice grew thick beneath my flesh, pushing to be let free. It was as if I wasn’t solely in control of my body anymore. I knew my thoughts weren’t mine, but the urge—the need—to kill was overpowering.

I saw Lucian’s headless body by my feet, his face rolled on its side with his lifeless eyes staring up at me, my body awash with his blood.
