Every conversation we’d ever had had ended in an argument. But I was determined not to let him get the better of me this time.

He had a habit of pissing people off—something I inherited and despised. But after being with Natalie, and seeing the way she looked at me, I’d come to a decision. Whatever man she saw, that was who I was going to be.

“Rumir!”

My father's voice echoed through the house, and I crossed one leg over the other and rested my elbow on the arm of my chair.

“Rumir!”

I closed my eyes instead of answering.

He knew exactly where I was because Myleon would have told him. But of course, he had to come barging in as if storming the house in battle.

"Where is your mother?" he barked. I cracked my eyes open, studying the oversized fur coat he was wearing because he lived in Esavale, which was all ice all year round. "Once again, she's left you to be fodder for the gossipmongers. Reject the girl, Rumir. I won't repeat it."

I hated his voice, his smell, and his face, although we were practically identical. The only difference between us was the long scar running from his right temple to his left cheek. His hair was longer than mine, almost to his back, which was the reason I always kept mine short.

Because of him, I hated my reflection.

I released a breath. "Mom's not here. She's asleep. So whatever complaints you have, save them for when she wakes.” I narrowed my eyes at him. “But don’t think for a second I’m going to reject Natalie.”

His nose scrunched with disgust. “Weak, that is what you are, Rumir! You’re a dragon, son! Act like one! Will you stand by and watch while a wolf beds her then, huh?”

He laughed, making my ears ring with the sound. And just like that, my body became tense with rage, and I lost it.
