I wasn't going to push, but Goddess, I wanted to ask him about it again. When I’d mentioned it before, he'd skillfully redirected the conversation, and so I’d stopped asking. My only guess was that it must have belonged to someone from his past life on Earth.

His lips parted as his hand fell from Sif’s head, but before he could say anything, lightning struck over our heads, and the clouds opened.

A shower of rain poured down on us, causing Sif to rear up on her back legs. She bent her wings over our heads as if sheltering us from the rain, and we walked back to the patio.

By the time we got there and climbed over, Lucian and I were both soaked.

“Go on,” Lucian said to Sif. “I’ll see you later.”

Sif screeched in response and turned away. She ran and leaped into the air, her loud cry echoing through the forest. Lucian began removing his shirt, revealing the scars on his chest that went up to his shoulders.

His muscles shifted and flexed as he pulled the wet shirt over his head, and my wolf howled with excitement. This view was so much more interesting than the pond. I looked away when Lucian's eyes slid to me.

“So, your scars. How did you get those again?” I asked, combing my damp hair back.

He reached out and took a hold of my top. For a second, I thought he was going to take it off me, but instead, he pulled me closer. "I fought a vampire General once who could shift into a bird, of sorts. His claws did this after he picked me up and flew into the air with me.” He pushed away a few strands of wet hair that stuck to my cheek. “That General was really hard to kill.” He shook his head, as if he could dislodge the memories that easy.

Then he looked back at me and smiled. "I'm glad you're here."

I traced the scars on his chest, then wrapped my arms around his neck. “I’m glad I came.”

"You can stay if you wish. You could borrow one of my shirts to wear while your clothes dry."

He was asking me to stay over!

“Sure.” I shrugged, trying not to appear as excited as I was. “I can stay for a while longer.”

He tilted his head to the side, his hands snaking around my waist. "You can stay the night." I went still, my heart thudding loudly, and Lucian smirked. "I have a guest room."

I couldn’t help chuckling. “You did that on purpose.”

"Yes, I did," he whispered in my ear, and my skin dotted with goosebumps.

Our bond roared to life, pulling us even closer together until I was flush against him. He tightened his hold around me, kissing my cheek, my shoulder, and then my temple before pulling away.

I leaned toward him as if pulled along by his aura, but I reached out and grabbed hold of the railing. I swallowed hard, watching as Lucian's eyes changed to black for a mere second.

Moments like this with him meant so much, mainly because they were so rare. I was over the moon and didn't mind in the least that the boots that I'd just purchased were drenched, as was my hair that I'd spent twenty minutes curling.

“I’ll go get you a towel and a shirt to change into,” he said, his voice low. I nodded, not trusting my voice.

He turned away and went into the house, and I closed my eyes and sighed. Turning to the pond, I watched its surface ripple with each raindrop that fell. Thunder rumbled overhead, and I touched my fingers to the cheek that Lucian had kissed.

Whenever he was relaxed like this, the magnetic pull between us intensified. It was maddening. I wanted to be in his arms always. I felt the same way about Rumir, as well, which made ignoring him right now so difficult.

My nostrils flared as a familiar scent wafted through the air, but as quickly as it had appeared, it vanished. My hold on the railing tightened as I leaned over, looking for him, but there was nothing.

Had I imagined it?

I stepped back towards the door. No, there was no mistaking that scent. Rumir had been here. But why had he left?
