“What are you doing, Rumir? You can do better than that, can't you?" I heard Cedric ask, but I was picturing Natalie and her beautiful blue eyes staring at me with love.

Cedric was taunting me, forcing me to give in to my anger.

“The gods haven’t murdered anyone,” I said through clenched teeth. “They haven’t experimented on souls and wildlife, either.”

My vision became spotty again. The colors of the world blended with red. I coughed up more blood and wiped at my mouth with the back of my hand.

“Sure, they're selfish at times, but at least they aren't murderers. That's what you are.” I looked up and laughed through the pain. “How do you do it? How do you not realize that you’re not worth shit, yet you still talk as if you’re some kind of savior? Everyone knows what you are, Cedric, and it's not a god, no matter how much power you gain by stealing it. You were created by the primordial gods—the gods who created everything. But that wasn’t enough for you. Everyone knows that you’ve trapped a Primordial and you’re using her in your mad quest for power. You’re the personification of a dog biting the hand that feeds it.”

Cedric's face became expressionless. His jaws clenched, but he held my stare. I'd struck a nerve. Good. Instead of trying to stand up again, I sat down with my back to the wall.

“You talk about being a god, but really, all you are is a thief. You’re standing there, bashing the gods, when you’ve stolen power from one yourself, all to make yourself stronger.” I sighed and closed my eyes. “How about proving your own strength, instead of a Primordial’s? You don’t have the guts to fight fair, do you?” I shook my head. “Of course, you don’t. After all, you’re nothing but a coward.”

I winced and grabbed my arm. My hand was now totally covered by red veins.

I swallowed, trying to control my rage. I was getting to him. I could tell. "And by the way, you're wasting your time telling me how great I’d have been if I'd stuck by your side. You're a mad man. Why would you think I'd want anything to do with you?"

I held his stare and lowered my voice. Even in this state, I needed to make him realize I was a threat. “Stay away from Natalie, Cedric.” I coughed and wiped at the sweat that fell into my eye. I was so cold, yet sweating buckets. “That’s the only warning I’m giving you.”

He didn't say anything, but just stood there, staring at me. I hoped my words had burned through him like this damn bite on my shoulder was burning through me.

“You shouldn't worry about me going after Natalie, son,” he said, growling low. “We both know that she'll be pursuing me. Because, without a doubt, the only thing on her mind right now is finding you.”

He wasn't lying, and that only pissed me off further. I was bait.

“Your mate has been a thorn in my side since she came to this realm,” Cedric said with an exasperated exhale. “And I’ve seen her strength firsthand. But I won't allow her to get in my way, so I'll have to move forward with my plans earlier than I’d planned. Personally, I’d love to sit back and watch this realm burn for as long as possible—watch the gods burn—but it’s time for me to stop playing games.”

He moved forward until he was standing at my feet. He bent over to look at me, and I saw his eyes turn from green to red. He was corrupted, lost. A soul enslaved to chaos. He knew it, but didn't care.

“Neither you, nor Natalie, nor anyone else, will get in my way." He pointed to the sky. "Sit tight, son. The real war is only beginning.”

“She’ll stop you,” I growled. “Natalie will stop you.”

Cedric smiled, and his fangs descended. "I can hardly wait to see her try."
