PROLOGUE

Cassian

A keening wail filled the dark space I was in. I couldn’t see anything or anyone in the pitch-dark room. The only audible sounds were the crying and screams. The smells of pain, anguish and terror-induced sweat filled the room, but my body didn’t feel a thing, for I was merely a thought drifting in nothingness. I laughed at the strange feeling of numbness but stopped when the wailing suddenly stopped, leaving a thick silence in its wake.

“Hello?” My voice bounced around in the darkness, but there was no answer.

A dull pain throbbed through me, but I couldn’t pinpoint where on my body it was coming from. There was an emptiness in me as well, but why? My laughter drifted back to me, a maniacal tone to it, a laugh that didn’t belong to me. Instead of feeling scared, though, I felt calm and peaceful. I had no idea where I was or how I got here, but I wanted to stay for a while. The wailing turned into a hum; the pitch was feminine and soothing. A wave of nostalgia fell over me at the familiarity of the tune. It was a bedtime song that Grace used to sing to me when I was just a pup.

“Close your eyes, dear boy,” her voice whispered through the space.

And I did.
