Her enthusiastic smile returned once more as if nothing happened. “I hope you gained the information you sought. I will be seeing you both soon.” She turned to Griffin and leaned in. The woman must love invading people’s space. She whispered, almost too low for me to hear, “You are not ill from the flu.” She patted his shoulder and left us in that dark corner, more confused than before she showed up.

As we walked back to my truck, I asked Griffin, “Can you not mention our little excursion to Emily? I don’t want her stressing over it until I know if the information is even worth getting stressed out over.”

“Alright, but Emily can handle it. She’s not as fragile as you think.”

We climbed into the truck and drove in silence for a few minutes before Griffin said, “Hey, man, you don’t have to deal with everything on your own. I know you’re the alpha, so you want to present this image that you don’t need help, but you can be open with me. I’m not in your pack, so it’s not like you have to impress me.”

I rolled my eyes and sighed dramatically. “What are you going on about?” I turned to see Griffin had a completely serious look on his face.

“I’m sorry about Grace, man. I didn’t know her much, but she was a really kind person. She didn’t deserve what she got, and I’ll help you make them pay.”

I swallowed hard and stared ahead at the road, muttering, “Thanks.” I took a deep breath. “You know, in a real wolf pack, it’s the mother that holds the pack together, not the alpha. In fact, there is no alpha. Just wolves who work together.”

I paused and Griffin listened intently, not interrupting, so I continued. “If any of the members leave, the pack goes on. It isn’t really affected. However, if the mother dies, the pack dies, too. That or they leave. The pack can’t survive without the mother.”

Griffin nodded in my peripheral vision. “Yeah, well thank god we’re werewolves, right? The pack thrives on the alpha, which means they need you to survive. And Grace would be proud of how you run your pack. She was. I could see it in her eyes.”

A little while later, I pulled into the driveway to the warehouse and parked my truck. Emily and Ember were there, hopping out of their car. They must’ve just got back—a day early.

“Hey, guys,” I greeted, rushing up to Emily and sweeping her up in an embrace. She squeezed me tight, and it felt deeper than her missing me. It was like she was gripping onto me for dear life.

Griffin strolled over a moment later, sheepishly peeking at Emily.

“We need to talk,” she said, her tone serious. She glanced at Griffin. “To both of you.”
