“Thank you,” I answered, ignoring the question but delivering my gratitude. “You’re like a knight in shining piercings.” I gestured to the many piercings on his face, and he laughed—a big, hearty chortle.

Ember explained what happened with Raul to both the mystery man and me. I had no idea what went down. All I knew was that my friend was in trouble, and I had to help her. As she explained the situation, she also told me about power-sharing.

Mr. Mystery had a confused expression and asked why I didn’t know what power-sharing was if I was in the sharing den. Valid question, I’ll admit.

“What were you doing there?” Ember countered.

He smirked again, his smile a devilishly handsome spread on his attractive face. “I sell potions. And poisons. You need, I got. Inherited the stand from my father. And I’m good, too. Even better than my old man.”

Since he knew about potions and poisons, I figured he might have a cure for Griffin’s medical ailments. I told him about Griffin’s symptoms. Ember was shocked when I described how he’d been going through the change each night without going crazy. In my rush to get answers for him, it slipped my mind that she didn’t know.

I asked if he had a potion to cure it, but he shook his head. “Sounds like Wolfsbane,” he answered, and when my expression remained blank, he continued. “It’s a poison that people use to drug wolves. It’s not fatal, but it affects them like a virus. Gives the wolf fevers and cold chills, sweats, makes them sleep—sometimes for days at a time and even through the change.”

My eyes widened and I took a step back, utterly shocked to hear the symptoms of wolfsbane mimic Griffin’s. “How do I fix it?”

“Just wait a few days for it to leave his system. If you aren’t certain, tell him not to drink anything that he didn’t personally make himself. If after a few days he’s feeling like a brand-new wolf, then you know someone was poisoning him.”

I shook my head, clicking my tongue against the roof of my mouth. “I don’t understand, why would someone poison him, and who?” The worry was thick in my tone.

He cocked an eyebrow and his lips curled into a sexy smile. “He must really mean a lot to you, huh? That’s too bad. I wouldn’t mind taking you out sometime. Both of you,” he said as he faced Ember. “Two gorgeous femmes fatales. Hm, maybe it’s better if I keep my distance, huh?”

A laugh escaped his lips as we approached the exit of the Black Hole. “Well, this is where I leave you,” he said, running his hand through his long, blonde hair. “If you ever decide to come back to the market, come see me.”

He turned to walk away but I called out to him. “Wait!” Stopping, he turned to face me. “What’s your name?”

“Lucas.”
