“I agree,” Griffin said, nodding to Ember. “I’m a little exhausted with the topic and could use a drink. Especially now that I’m feeling a little better. Besides, I could use a breather. We can talk about all that later.”

“Well, I’m good on any alcohol, but I wouldn’t mind making tea. Anyone else want one?”

We spent the next few hours relaxing and having a nice time enjoying each other’s company. It went surprisingly well considering there has been some tension among our group lately, mostly after the guy’s fight. But now we were in a weird three-way relationship. I felt like the heroine in a reverse harem novel, and that was something I wasn’t sure I could get used to.

After a while, Morgan left to work at the bar. Nearly as soon as she left, Ember brought up our next move. “The fortune teller said we need to reunite the sisters or something. What do you think that means?”

Who knew? All we could do was throw out suggestions, though none were anything solid. Maybe there were other witches in the coven we weren’t aware of. Maybe these “sisters” were actually some kind of deity or divine being. Or maybe it was a load of crock and didn’t mean a thing.

We went through each thing the fortune teller said, analyzing the lines as if we were reading poetry in college. “The moon and the sun, both derived from one.” What does that even mean?

“A family tied, a family broken.” Was that referring to the family Samara destroyed? Cassian’s family? Maybe Griffin’s? Hell, what about Ember? At this point, it could mean anyone’s family.

But the two sisters thing is what really confused me. What sisters? Maybe it meant how Ember and I called each other sisters? Though, how would the fortune teller know that? Besides, it’s not like the fate of the world depended on two lonely women who found friendship.

The only line I felt certain about was the one that said, “to end the reign of Red.” That was either talking about Samara’s red hair or the bloodshed she caused. It had to be.

But restore the Luna and the Sol? Was that talking about the sisters? Were they the luna and the sol? Maybe there was a pack that had a luna with a sister. Maybe it was the Ash Hounds.

I told Cassian I wanted to speak to the Ash Hounds myself and asked if he could arrange something. He said he’d call them soon and let me know. Not only was seeking the truth mentioned in our fortune, but the guys’ fortune, as well. And we were pretty sure it was the same woman who told both of us our fortunes.

We only hoped that she wasn’t working for Samara and steering us off course.

Cassian said he needed to head out and get back to the warehouse. He’d been with us all day and had some pack business to attend to.

Ember said she’d ride with him so she could sleep at the warehouse. All the bar patrons below us took too much of a toll on her psychic abilities, and she wanted to stay where she could enjoy the peace of the forest. “I’ll get my car in the morning,” she answered.

I couldn’t fault her for that. It must be exhausting to have to see everyone’s auras, feel their emotions, even when you don’t want to. Overwhelming. That’s what it would be.

And soon, it was only Griffin and me at the apartment. He looked much better. And because he wasn’t so sick, he decided to spend the night in his cell like he was supposed to.

After that, I was alone.

Shortly after Griffin went downstairs, Morgan showed up, out of the blue. It was super weird seeing her come over after the change, but I didn’t mind the company. My mind was all over the place, and I needed someone to talk with, someone to calm me down.

We talked for a bit, and she was kind, consoling me in my quest to find the truth about my parents.

“You know what you need?” Morgan asked. When I shrugged, she answered, “Some time away from here. Why don’t we pack up a few things and head out to my cottage for the night? Have a little girl time and forget about all your troubles. What do you say?”

It took some convincing. I was wary after what Ember had said about how Morgan can’t be trusted. But we were bonding so well, I didn’t want to ruin the moment. Sure, it might not be the best timing, but a little self-love was just what we needed to rejuvenate so we could think more rationally. Besides, it was just for the night.

I agreed, and Morgan said she’d leave Griffin a note. “We need to invite Ember,” I suggested. Apparently, Morgan was about as fond of Ember as Ember was of her. But she agreed, and I tried calling her.

No answer.

I left her a voicemail and a text letting her know we were leaving. Morgan said she’d text Ember the address on the way and asked for Ember’s number. I was hesitant to give it to her, but figured if she was only texting her the address, what could it hurt?

“Man, I really wish Ember could’ve come with us,” I said as I piled my bag into her car and climbed in, buckling up. “But I really do need somewhere that’s peaceful to think things through.”

“Hopefully Ember can join us in the morning, and we can have our own girl’s retreat,” Morgan answered with a grin. “Just the three of us.”
