“You expect us to trust someone we don’t know,” the lone female stated. Well, so much for girl power. “You do understand, Miss Luna, that this is our pack we’re talking about. Every decision we make impacts us all, and we can’t lay our trust in a witch who claims to be mated to our alpha.”

“Claims to be mated?” I scoffed—probably not my best reaction, but that woman didn’t need to be such a bitch about it. “Look, I had no idea what a mate even was before I was informed I was mated to Cassian.”

“And Griffin,” Sam pointed out, sneering at me from behind the desk. “Don’t forget, you have two mates.”

“I didn’t ask for this. Any of it. I only just found out about the supernatural world—”

“And yet you expect us to let you lead our pack?” The female wolf asked.

“Well, no, not lead, per se—”

“Then why are you here? We’re taking time from our busy schedule of keeping this place together, so you can play princess? You’re wasting our time.”

Every time I tried to speak, someone interrupted me. They wouldn’t let me speak, defend my decision, or even present it. They were only interested in cutting me off and giving me a hard time.

And I was sick of it.

I wasn’t here for them, I was here for Cass, and dammit, they were going to listen.

Heat tingled in my fingertips, and I could feel small flames forming in my palms, flickering and coming to life. I glanced at Ember, whose eyes were already on my hands, and with a panicked expression, I begged her to help. I couldn’t lose control. Not here, not now.

She took a deep breath, and I followed her lead, as the wolves continued to spit out every reason I shouldn’t be involved. Maybe if I reasoned with them…

“Look, guys, I understand where you’re coming from. I wouldn’t want an outsider, either. But if you’d just listen—”

“You said it yourself. You wouldn’t want it, so why should we listen to a word you say?”

My anger grew, building more with every remark, laying brick after brick until it was too massive to break down the barrier. Rage—it had transformed and was only growing with every word they muttered. I had to put an end to it before my rage consumed me, turning to flames.

“Enough!” My voice boomed through the room, leaving everyone stunned—speechless—and I continued speaking in an even, albeit bitter, tone. “I came in here, hoping we could have a civil conversation, come to some kind of agreement, but you won’t even let me speak! Now, if you’ll just listen to me—”

“But that’s just it. We don’t want to—”

“Silentium,” I shouted, making a zipping motion to my lips. This time, I’d cut her off with a spell I’d read from Morgan’s book. Silentium made things silent, and instantly, the female wolf’s mouth was closed.

“Anyone else object to letting me speak?” I asked, glancing around the room. The female wolf stood with a resentful glare, but the rest shook their heads, letting me continue. Except for Sam. He didn’t shake his head, and he no longer had a frown. Rather, he simply leaned back in the chair, his fingers linked together, resting against his stomach.

“Whether you like it or not, I’m Cassian’s mate, which means I very well could be your luna someday. But Cassian is more than my mate, he’s my best friend. All I’m asking is that you let me help take care of him and the pack he treasures while he cannot do so. I’ll admit, I don’t know the first thing about being luna, but if you guide me instead of shutting me down, maybe I can be a luna worthy of this pack.”

I glanced to a smiling Ember, who nodded for me to continue.

“Here is my request: let me take the position of luna—at least while Cassian is out of commission—with Sam by my side.”

Sam eyed me with skepticism, his brow quirked, and he leaned forward in his chair. “Two mates aren’t enough?”

“Are you… saying you want to be mated to Sam?” the medic asked. “Because that isn’t possible…”

“What? No. I’m saying that I have no idea how to be a luna, but I’d like to try. Sam is Cassian’s second-in-command. He knows how to lead the pack and what this pack needs.”

“Then why try to be luna? Why not let Sam take the reins?” the medic questioned.

Sam raised his eyebrows, waiting for the answer, a smug little smirk at the corner of his lips.

I glanced around the room, unsure of how to answer. My mouth opened, and I was sure words would come out, but nope. Nothing. I stood there as if choking on air, unable to say a thing. Closing my eyes, I sighed, and when my eyes peeled open, I said the only thing that popped into my mind.

“Because I can’t do nothing. I need to do something besides make sandwiches. Samara is trying to turn the world into a dark hole of chaos and destruction! Look, I know it sounds crazy, but I just know that this strange bond that I have with Cassian and Griffin is related. I’m not sure how, but I have this deep-rooted feeling that our bond can somehow help end Samara and the curse.”
