I shot him a disapproving look but nodded. After all, it was true. I looked at Emily, who was chewing her nails, anxiously looking around.

“Well, I’m going to tell Sam what you found out, even if it isn’t much. I’ll see you guys in a bit.” His gaze lingered, drifting between us, and he slightly nodded toward her, as if signaling that I needed to talk to her in private.

I half-smiled and nodded back. Despite wanting to be with the same mate, something had clicked between us. An understanding. He knew just as much as I did that Emily needed us both, and for that to work, we needed to work as a team.

When it was just the two of us, Emily turned away. Her breathing was heavy, almost a sob, and I wrapped my arms around her from behind, holding her to my chest.

Her warmth sent a tingle through my body, down my limbs, to my fingertips. Feeling her in my embrace, just the two of us, was all I could ever ask for.

She leaned her head back against my chest and sighed. “Maybe I should just give myself over to Samara in exchange for the curse ending. Do you think that would work?”

I spun her around and gripped her shoulders, looking into her eyes, searching for an answer to what the hell she was thinking. “You can’t do that. You won’t. Cassian and I won’t let you.”

“But if it could save everyone else, then maybe it’s worth a shot.”

“No. That’s what Samara wants. She wants you to give up. You’re wrong if you think we’ll be safe just because you give yourself over. She’ll still come after us next because she’s fucking evil.”

I slid the strands of blonde from her face, tucking it behind her ear. Her blue eyes, filled with a mix of wonder and worry, searched mine for answers I didn’t have. But there was one thing I knew.

“I couldn’t bear the thought of living in a world without you. Please, Emily… don’t leave me.” I pulled her closer, nestling my face into her neck. She shivered as my breath hit her nape, and I brought my lips to her ears to whisper, “Please. I need you. More than you know.”

She grabbed my face and pulled it toward hers, gently brushing her lips against mine. My eyes closed, absorbing the sensations that erupted within me. “I need you, too,” she whispered before crashing her lips into mine, taking the very air from my lungs like I was floating in the clouds.

Her lips parted, allowing my tongue into her mouth, twirling and playing with hers in a delicate dance that sent a wave of heat through my body. My hand wrapped around her back and up to her shoulders, pulling her in until our bodies were pressed together.

She gasped slightly from the motion and ran her fingers through my hair, gripping it tight and giving a light tug.

My inner wolf surfaced, and I growled in response. A heady growl that begged for her to let me get closer. She let out a light chuckle and nipped at my ear before she whispered, “We’d better get back soon.”

Her breath tickled my ear, and I pushed my body against her harder, not ready to go anywhere. “I think we should stay out here for a while. Maybe take a trip into the woods together?” I suggested, knowing I would get shot down.

She swatted my arm, sliding out of my grasp. “Down, boy. We can pick this up again later.”

I whimpered, wanting more, but she smirked at my neediness.

“Alright,” I relented. “But I’m holding you to your promise, Princess.”

She swatted my arm again. “Didn’t I tell you to call me Queen?” Wrapping her arm around my waist, she leaned her head against my chest, and we walked back to the warehouse.

“My apologies, your majesty.”
