I thought I’d ruined the moment, but how strange that after such an embarrassing interruption, we’d become even closer. The headiness of the moment ended, but not so much the kissing. We spent the next few hours talking and laughing, goofing off in the only moments we were allowed to escape from our responsibilities. And we shared more kisses, each one more intimate than the last.

At some point, I must’ve fallen asleep because I woke up the following day to Cassian and Griffin telling me it was time to go. I splashed some water on my face and swished it in my mouth. It was the closest I could get to brushing my teeth without a toothbrush.

When I joined the rest of them, Alpha Radolph was waiting for me, a book in his hand.

“This was your mother’s journal.” He handed me an old leather book, torn and split along most of the edges. “Your father left it here for safekeeping, since no one would expect a witch’s book in a wolf’s den. I’m not sure what’s in it, but he said it was important and must be kept safe. I figured it might be better if you had it.”

Tears built in my eyes as I grabbed the book. Finally, a piece of my parents. The only part of them I’d ever honestly had. Without warning, I grabbed Alpha Radolph into a hug. He let out a hearty laugh, wrapping his massive bear claws around me and patting my back. “There, there, little pup. Don’t get soft on me, now.”

We piled into Cassian’s truck, and Griffin asked what was in the book. I flipped open to a page in the middle, silently reading words resembling those on the object.

“It’s a spell book.”
