Before we could even speak, we were transported to the gates outside the royal palace. It was now dark, and the woods surrounding the palace held enough coverage for any final details we needed to discuss.

“How’d you do that?” Griffin asked. “Do all fae have that ability?”

Newt snorted, a half-laugh accompanied it. “The fae believe Goddess Divine bestows the power of transport upon certain individuals. Some even believe you have to sacrifice something to get it. But I say, to hell with that. I’ve sacrificed a lot for the queen, but never the Goddess. Really, it’s all a load of crock. Some of us are just gifted, like humans with magic. Do any of you have magic?”

“I do,” I answered, my hand raised slightly. “Fire and Water.”

Newt’s eyebrows rose. “Two affinities? That’s unheard of since ancient times.”

“I did have Earth,” I chuckled, my laugh turning melancholy. “But I…” Trailing off, I realized what I’d said and caught myself.

Cassian’s hand rested on my arm, and he looked into my eyes. “What are you talking about, Em?”

I glanced around at the others, who were all shocked, including Rohan. He was probably surprised I had two affinities, but the others had never been informed of my decision to give the Ancient One my Earth affinity.

“Yeah,” Ember added. “What happened?”

That was a can of worms I wasn’t ready to open. So, like anyone with a healthy handle on trauma, I changed the subject. “Do other supernaturals have the power to transport?”

Whether the others understood my closure of the topic or simply realized now wasn’t the time, they didn’t say anything further about it, so Newt answered, “Yes, and not all believe in Goddess Divine, which only proves that nonsense can’t be true. Now, shut up about all this other crap and get to work.”

We went over the plan once more, ensuring we knew every detail about the palace as possible. Hopefully, it hadn’t changed much since Newt’s time there.

“I’ll be here to get you when you’re done,” he said, transporting himself away and vanishing before our eyes, leaving us standing there at the gate, risking our lives for his cause.

I only hoped the risk was worth it.
