“Would you like to dress up with us?” Emily asked. “We decided to switch styles for the night. Ember chose my outfit, and I chose hers. We can do the same for you, if you’d like. It’s super fun.”

“I thought your clothes were more, uh, revealing than usual.” She glanced from Emily to me, her eyes lingering on my shoulders, then darting up to my eyes. Quickly, she glanced away, and her cheeks reddened again.

Was she smitten? Perhaps, she liked women. I could only be so lucky…

Emily and I worked together, blending our styles to create the perfect outfit for Cove—a flowy green sundress, with her hair pulled into a braided bun. If I thought her curves were nice before, they were damn near distracting now. I couldn’t stop looking at her reflection in the mirror.

As we worked, we talked about how Emily and I met, which eventually led to the topic of Emily’s father, Alpha Koda.

“He was the alpha before Radolph,” Cove said in her educator voice which left my stomach in flutters. “In fact, when Radolph first joined our pack, the other wolves weren’t fond of having an outsider rogue wolf joining. But everyone loved Alpha Koda, so they listened to him. He had a way of talking to people and making them feel heard, important. He respected everyone, regardless of who they were, and because of that, people respected him.”

Emily’s aura glowed pink with bright sunny bursts of yellow. Hearing such kind words about her father gave her so much happiness.

“That must be where you get your kindness, Em,” I said, and she smiled warmly.

“Oh, yes,” Cove agreed. “Definitely. Alpha Koda was a kind man, more so than anyone I’ve ever met. But he knew how to be firm, which made him the perfect leader for our pack. That’s why everyone was devastated when he left.”

“When he left?” Emily asked, trying to piece together the information she knew with the information Cove was giving her.

“Yes. I was only twelve when it happened, so I don’t remember too many details, but Alpha Koda had fallen in love with a witch—your mother. Obviously, our pack wasn’t thrilled because we have wolf mates, which she wasn’t. But because it was Koda, they got over their prejudice.

“But something happened with Samara, and he ran off with his family. Many people in our pack were furious and heartbroken. They couldn’t believe their alpha would leave like that. But I don’t fault him for leaving. He was in love and had a family. His family was in danger. He had to flee, for their safety. But from the pack’s view, he chose a witch and their offspring over them.”

I looked over to Emily, and her aura had dampened some, a conflict of love for her father and guilt for taking him from his pack.

“So, what does the pack think of him now?” she asked, almost hesitant to hear the answer.

“They think he was the best alpha they could’ve had and will forever be sorely missed.”
