“Should we help?” I asked, unable to peel my eyes away.

No one answered. If we waited much longer, could that beast kill the being? I couldn’t bear the cries from the figure. They pierced through me, twisting my insides.

I rushed forward, blasting the beast with a fireball. It snarled, flashed its large, pointy teeth, and charged at me.

Shit!

Another fireball shot out from my palm, but in my panic, I missed. The figure lurched forward, grabbing the beast by the back of the neck and gripping it tightly. They raised the beast in the air like the beast was lighter than a feather. With their other hand, they used some type of magic to immobilize the beast. In a flash, it disintegrated, its bones landing in a dusty pile on the ground.

My jaw hit the floor, and I scurried backward, stumbling over a stupid rock and landing on my ass. Towering over me was this large, cloaked figure that had just turned an enormous beast into a pile of dust.

“You,” a voice said, and the figure pointed with a finger that almost looked human. But it wasn’t.

“Me?” I said in a shaky voice, pointing to myself.

They pulled off their cloak, revealing a large, man-like creature with long, black wings. His face was that of a human. His body, though shaped like a human’s, was covered by black clothing—a large sword in the sheath at his side.

“Thank you, kind stranger.” He motioned me closer. I absently followed his instructions, standing up and walking to him. His head tilted to the side, and he observed me, his eyes giving me a once-over. “You are not meant to be here. You are not dead.”

“No,” I answered honestly. “I’m not. I’m here to seek out Thanat, the ruler of the dead.”

His confused expression morphed into a smile. “Congratulations, kind stranger. You have found him.”
