Were they… whatever you are?

No. His response was short and offered no further explanation.

I sighed. Balt, what are you?

Your friend is coming, he said, dodging the topic once again.

Before he disappeared, like he always does, I shouted, Wait! I wanted to ask you something.

Better make it quick. His tone was filled with impatience.

How do we get back to the demon realm?

Just wait. Amon will see you soon. Now, I must go. Speak with you soon, dear.

How did he know about Amon? He cut me off when I tried to tell him before, so how did he know? But I couldn’t ask, because he was gone.

Just like that, he’d once again left an empty feeling in the pit of my stomach. But, why? Why did I feel this connection to him? Every time we spoke, I felt a sense of calm wash over me, despite the annoyance of his ambiguity. Yet still, I looked forward to speaking with him and didn’t want him to disappear.

I couldn’t explain the way I felt, but these feelings grew more apparent with every conversation. No longer could I deny them. Balt was more than some strange creature in the Otherworld. He was more to me, but I wasn’t sure what. I only knew that I wanted him to stay by my side—or, should I say, in my mind.

After a few minutes, I opened my eyes to see Emily walking into our room. Her eyebrows were creased, concern written all over her face. She walked over to the bed and handed me a letter.

Coordinates. That was all it contained. But then it dawned on me where those coordinates led.

“Oh, shit,” I said. “This is to the High Council.”
