I walked into the camp, heads turning to face me as I stepped up to Morgan. Her eyes widened in shock, and she said my name breathlessly.

“Griffin? What are you doing here?”

“I followed your scent,” I shrugged, stepping closer to her. “I needed to talk with you… to figure things out between us.” Was I implying something romantic? Maybe. Whatever it took to get her to listen.

As expected, the wolves around her had their noses in the air, sniffing for the others, but the confusion on their faces let me know the mud idea had worked.

“You—you came here for me?” she asked, her voice cracking in the middle.

“Of course. You’re my friend, Mor. I’d follow you anywhere.”

I turned away as I said it. The first half was true. She was my friend, was being the key word. Maybe she had changed, or maybe she just needed someone to smack some sense into her. Either way, it was my job to do it. But I couldn’t do it until I had her at the warehouse, where we could talk without the threat of Kellan’s wolves looming over us.

Speaking of the devil, he popped up from one of the tents, laughing methodically and with purpose. “Are you lost, brother?”

I shook my head. “No. I came to get my friend.”

Kellan tsked three times. “I’m afraid she’s our friend now. You’ll need to find a new playmate.”

“Morgan, come on. Come back with me. Let’s talk through this.”

Her eyes lit up, and I just about had her persuaded. She took my hand, ready to leave with me. Just as she did, one of Kellan’s pack members shouted, “He has reinforcements!”

Cassian and his men burst onto the scene, back in their wolf forms. Kellan’s pack members were being ripped to shreds, and for a moment, we had the upper hand in the fight.

But that all changed when more of Kellan’s packmates—nearly a hundred—emerged from the trees, closing in on the camp.

Shit. They had more pack members at this camp than we’d anticipated.

Fights broke out, and everyone did their best just to get away, slipping on the mud covering their bodies and masking their scent. Morgan used her air magic to try to suck the literal life from Tiny. In a panic, I drove the needle Cassian’s pack had brought—the needle that housed a sleep serum—into Morgan’s neck, pressing down with my thumb to dispense the liquid.

“Griffin?” she asked equal amounts of shock, confusion, and anger present in her eyes. But what really struck me through the heart was the look of hurt and betrayal. Slowly, her eyes closed, and her body went limp.

Swinging her over my shoulder, Cassian jumped to my defense, blocking me from any attacks. He growled at the man who came at me with a knife, snarling his teeth as I tied Morgan to his back.

I jumped onto Tiny, who, even in wolf form, was bigger than the rest of us, and we ran off into the woods, Kellan’s voice growing distant as he shouted, “Cowards! Running off with your tail between your legs.”

I didn’t care what he thought of us. We came here for Morgan, and we got her. An intelligent warrior always knows when to recede—live today, fight tomorrow.

At least we had Morgan now. Once we got back to the warehouse, we’d interrogate her and figure out what the hell was going on. And with any luck, I could get my friend back on our side.
