Well, maybe she’s not feeling great. I hope she’ll be feeling better by midnight, which is now half an hour away. The organizers start announcing the silent-auction winners, and the local charities benefiting from this auction. I take Belinda back to our table and get her another glass of champagne. She sips at it, but falls quiet, protesting that she’s just tired.

I win the string of pearls—I should, because I bid a good chunk over the market value, and also because I know that the benefiting charity is one that provides continuing adult education like basic financial management and household management, as well as classes in parenting and eldercare.

Bonus: I get to accept the gold velvet box, and come back to Belinda to put it around her neck. Her eyes go wide, and she begins to look even more nervous than before. “Are you sure this is a good idea?” she whispers to me.

“Yes. I’m sure.”

I am, too. I’m sure she’s the one.

But honestly, I’m too busy looking at the way the pearls encircle her neck to really worry about her reaction. No, I tell a lie. I’m too busy thinking what she’d look like with a more personal pearl necklace—one personally created by me.

It fucking turns me on to think of her wearing nothing but my cum, and I have to fight off a massive boner.

We dance again. We dance to “At Last,” and “The Way You Look Tonight.” We dance to “Let’s Start the New Year Right,” Bing Crosby’s mushy sweet song.

When the countdown to midnight starts, I stand still and hold my girl, and look deep into her eyes. “You are the one,” I tell her. “I want to spend my life with you.”

This midnight kiss is the best one of my whole life.

As people around us start singing to “Auld Lang Syne,” I drop to one knee and ask Belinda to marry me.

She doesn’t answer. Her eyes fill with tears, and at first I think she’s simply overwhelmed. But then she blurts out, “No!” and runs away, and I’m left kneeling on the floor like an idiot, my heart breaking.

When I stumble to my feet, I leave the room too. On the way out, I see—of all people—my ex-girlfriend Camilla, who looks positively thrilled to see me so unhappy.

I’m so unhappy, I don’t even care.

I have to find Belinda.
