“She wanted you to have that money, honey,” Mom leans over to murmur to me. “She felt bad that she couldn’t pay you out of her income, but she knew her life insurance policy was substantial.”

Tears threaten me. I didn’t do it for the money. I just loved her.

“And she wanted you to have a nice honeymoon, because you were spending so much of your time with her instead of with Jake.”

I haven’t told Mom about Jake. Oh shit.

And I didn’t tell Aunt Nell about him, either, because I knew she’d worry. Double shit.

Especially given this “companion of choice” thing.

“Looks like you have a little less than nine months to take your vacation, Miss Ainsley,” Mr. Turk says, still smiling in that sympathetic way. “Mountain Ridge is really lovely. I know you’ll enjoy it.”

I’m still worried. “I have to have a companion?”

“That condition is so specified,” the lawyer points out.

“It’s not a problem,” Mom says. “She’s engaged.”

Oh, just hell.
