I shouldn't have let my guard down because a wolf took advantage of my distraction and jumped on my back. Cursing my stupidity, I tried shaking him off me, but his teeth were latched firmly on the scruff of my neck. The ground shook as a roar echoed. I looked to see a giant black wolf with streaks of silver, glow with a turquoise-colored aura, then began standing on its hind legs. Rowan shifted from wolf to Lycan, the crescent moon symbol shining brilliantly on his forehead.

Rowan grabbed the wolf that was on top of me by his face, forcing his jaw to release me, then slammed it to the ground hard enough for it to crack on impact. The wolf spit out of heaping of blood a second before death took over him. Thank Selene that Rowan was on our side.

"If you're going to stay and fight, at least pay attention to your surroundings," Rowan spoke in a weird duo voice that sounded a mix of animal and human speaking at the same time.

Okay, that was new. I didn't know he could talk in that form.

Rowan was right, I needed to focus. Taking his words to heart, I jumped to the right just as another wolf came for me but attacked him instead. After killing him and another that went for me, I spotted something hiding in the shadows, or rather, someone. Someone familiar. I maneuvered around the flurry of wolves and came face to face with someone I never expected to run into again.

"Well, well," Whitney purred menacingly. "Rosalinda Mendoza, so this is where you've been hiding."

I shifted back and growled at her. "Whitney. Can't say I'm happy to see you, but then again, I've always wanted to have a rematch with you."

Whitney tapped her chin, pretending to recall when we last fought. I knew she remembered, she loved knowing she bested me one-on-one last time. She wouldn't get that chance again. This time I was going to mop the floor with her.

"Oh yeah, I remember. I kicked your ass last time. Well, it must be my lucky day, because now I get to do it again. Pierce wants me to bring you back alive, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind me roughing you up first."

Then it was a good thing I liked it rough. Our rematch began with exchanging fists until we were both gripping each other's arms trying to overpower the other. Whitney was as tough as I remembered, but now that I knew how she fought, I had a better idea how to handle her.

While gritting her teeth, she smiled wickedly as she asked. "Tell me, little rose, did you miss Joaquin while you were gone?"

I knew what she was trying to do, and damn it all, I hate that it was giving her the effect she wanted. With my mind thinking about Joaquin, she managed to shoot her knee up to my stomach, knocking the air out of my lungs.

She laughed. "How sad that he chose to let himself take the brunt of Pierce's abuse to save you. Do you wanna hear how he loud he screamed in agony? How humiliating he must've felt being locked up and tortured for days on end?"

If I could catch my breath, I'd tell her how much I was going to kill her and Pierce. I didn't want to think about how much Joaquin had to endure because of me. If it was as bad as she was making it sound, how would I ever be able to look him in the eyes again? How would I even begin to beg for forgiveness? Not that I'd deserve it. Whitney got the upper hand by sliding her foot under me and turning me so I'd faceplant to the ground. She had me pinned with my arms held behind my back. I struggled to break free, but it was no use.

"Look around you, Rosie," Whitney said. "You may have met some new friends, but we still outnumber you."

I looked up while still trying to break through. My friends and family were struggling to fight back, and we were outnumbered. Rowan wasn't in any real danger, but he was occupied with trying to help the others. Kao saw my predicament and tried rushing over to help me but was taken down by four wolves. My eyes widened, fearing his end was coming. I wanted to go to him, but I couldn't. I wanted to cry for how weak I was. How stupid I felt for letting Whitney's words get to me. How I let everyone down.

Then everything shifted when a few more wolves dashed out of the trees and joined the fight. For a second, I thought Whitney brought in reinforcements to make sure she won, but these wolves were taking down the ones that were giving Kao and the others a hard time. Among the new wolves, my mate bond to Kai went off like crazy, signaling that he was here. He went for the wolves that were overpowering his twin and rescued him. Coming up behind was the roaring engine of a motorcycle. Del burst onto the scene, wolves jumping out the way to not get hit by the fast-moving vehicle. Del swerved the bike to a stop and got off, tossing her helmet to the side and reaching into her pack pocket pulling out her magic-enhanced weapon, Artemis. With a twist, the ends of Artemis expanded; the wolf heads and runes along the ends glowing vibrant blue with magic.

Del twirled and whipped Artemis in all directions, the ends colliding with wolves and causing blue sparks to flash upon impact. Her moves were fluid and precise as Artemis whipped and spun in her control. Every wolf that went for her got struck before they could so much as leave a scratch on her. When it looked like five wolves were about to jump her at once, Del slammed one end of Artemis to the ground, causing an explosion of shockwaves that sent them all flying and convulsing. Now it was starting to make sense why she was chosen by the Blue Moon; Del was a force to be reckoned with, even though she was human.

I noticed that Whitney's attention was on the fight, which gave me the opening I needed to get myself out of her hold. Since her face leaned close enough to mine, I elongated my canines and bit down on her ear. Whitney's shriek was both satisfying and loud enough to make me wonder if she could rupture an eardrum. The action did what I was hoping, she reeled back releasing her hold on me while she had a hand over the now bleeding ear. I should've torn it off.

"You fucking bitch," Whitney screamed. "I'm going to kill you."

I readied myself for her assault, but as she charged, Del cut in and swiped Artemis over her feet causing her to trip and flop to her side. "Mind if I cut in?" Del asked, twirling Artemis in her hand like it was a baton.

Whitney slammed her fist into the ground with a shout and pulled herself up, standing between me and Del. Normally I'd be against a two-on-one fight, for the simple fact that it was poor sportsmanship, but since this was a life and death situation, I figured I'd let it slide. Besides, I didn't think I'd be able to win without Del's help. Whitney, seeming too cocky about her fighting capabilities, decided to try fighting the two of us at once. It wasn't going the way she hoped. Del and I rotated, giving Whitney hits that she could block, only to get hit with blows coming from the opposite direction. We could see her struggling with being overpowered, which was making her become sloppy. This was our chance to finish her.

Whitney moved around to avoid getting struck by Del's Artemis, which gave me the moment to cut in and deck her in the gut. When she hunched over, I grabbed her face and brought it down to my knee that sprang up and clocked her in the nose. Blood splattered and I heard a crunch. Del finished her with a swift kick which had Whitney dropping to her back on the ground. Before she could get up, Del held her down with a foot on Whitney's mid-section, one end of Artemis pointing down at her bloodied face.

"All right, blondie, start talking," Del ordered. "Where the hell is your alpha?"

"Fuck you," Whitney spat out, her teeth painted red from the blood dripping down her crushed nose.

"There's no need to interrogate her that way." I looked up to see Roxanne approaching us, the violet of her magic flaring in her eyes. I wondered who was guarding the cabin if Roxanne was coming over to us, but a quick look saw Rowan in front of the entryway fending off what remained of the enemy wolves. Roxanne looked down at a seething Whitney and grinned. "Let's see what's going on in that head of yours, shall we?"

With a raised, glowing hand, Roxanne's magic radiated. I wasn't sure what was happening until I saw Whitney's eyes glowing in that same amethyst color as Roxanne's magic. A second later, Whitney let out another ear-piercing scream as she writhed under Del's boot. I wished I could see what Roxanne was doing, but maybe it wasn't a good idea to know. I only hoped she'd never have to do something like that to me. After what felt like an eternity, Whitney stopped squirming, drool dripping from the corner of her lip, her eyes were hooded, and was panting.

"I appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me," Roxanne said wickedly, then faced Del and me. "You're free to kill her now."

Del gave me a questioning look, wanting to know if I wanted to do the honors. Oh, I so wanted to. She pulled out a jagged looking dagger from one of the hilts strapped to her thigh and handed it to me. I took it and knelt close to Whitney. Her eyes were glassy, and she didn't move. Whatever Roxanne did to her was too much for her brain to handle. Taking the knife, I stabbed it through the side of her neck, watching as Whitney gasped for air before choking on her own blood, and died. That was satisfying. Once the initial high of the fight was wearing off, I noticed how quieter it sounded. I looked around to see my friends and family still standing, along with several other wolves that weren't too familiar to me. I even spotted Caleb and Raph, whom I was thankful that they were still alive.

Everyone began shifting back, and I was right, Kai was among the wolves that came to our rescue. When his eyes met mine, the smile on his face grew and he jogged over to me.
