"Really?" Javier asked, an eyebrow arched.

"Not really, but there's already a lot to process right now."

"You'll get used to it." I smirked.

Del huffed out a breath and brought us back on topic. "Okay, so fated mate bonds existed back then. So does that mean Mother Moon just ignored it when she formed a bond with these guys?"

"Seems like it. Then again, we're only making assumptions at this point. Nothing else in your father's reports state what all happened to form the pack."

"But we do have the fairytale that was based off Mother Moon and the Wolf Moon's gift," Kai pointed out.

He had a point there. How did the old fairytale fit into all of this? It talked about forming the wolf pack and some nameless entity tried tearing them apart by turning the wolves against one another.

"There was a nameless entity that attacked them," I spoke out loud. "That's what was said in the fairytale."

"Then who was this entity?" Del questioned, looking from Caleb and Raph on one side to Javier on her opposite end.

"At this point, I thought that answer was obvious," Kao chimed in, leaning back in his lawn chair, and resting an arm over my shoulder looking more relaxed than he should, given the predicament we were under.

"Oh?" Raph tilted his head to the side. "Care to share with the rest of the class?"

I felt his answer through our bond, and when I thought about it, it made sense. With the new intel we gathered about Mother Moon and her pack—the fact that she formed it based on choice rather than fate—and comparing it to my current experience, the answer was clear what this nameless entity was.

"Fate." I let the word fall from my lips. "Fate came for Mother Moon's pack because she went against it and formed a bond with the first wolf shifters."

I thought back to the future Atropos showed me, the result of what I could only assume was a battle where the only one left standing was that monster. Did the same thing happen to Selene during the time of the first wolf pack? The fairytale mentioned that the nameless entity—Fate—turned the wolves against each other, and that monster held the same Wolf Moon’s marking on its forehead that I had. Did that mean Fate would force one of my mates to turn against us?

"So, Fate hated the idea of Mother Moon going against the fated mate bond and decided to disrupt them by forcing them to attack one another," Kai said, fitting the new information into what we already knew from the fairytale.

Kao followed along without missing a beat. "But when Mother Moon tried telling her mates to walk away, they wouldn't. They chose to stay by her side."

"And to combat the new threat, Mother Moon tapped into the force of the Wolf Moon—which is the strongest full moon for us wolf shifters—and was able to grant them power to combat Fate’s influence," Javier finished.

"So, our real enemy is Fate," Kai said.

Del seemed to have concluded something as she frowned and stood up from her seat. Her mates looked up at her in confusion, but she only had eyes for me and my mates. "Even if that's the case, even if Mother Moon's enemy is Fate itself, that's not whoyourenemy is. Let’s not forget who you guys are up against right now."

That left the three of us in a deflated state of despair. She had a point. For a moment, I allowed myself to forget our current situation. We weren't dealing with Fate, at least not directly. Right now, our current enemy was Alpha Pierce. How could we deal with him, now that we were branded as traitors of our pack? Even though I was a newcomer and rejected the mate bond, Pierce did welcome me to the pack, which now made me a traitor to the Kingsrose pack as well. Wow, been officially a member of a new pack and branded a traitor, all within the span of maybe twenty seconds.

"So, what are you guys going to do about your former alpha?" Del asked us, her hands resting on her hips with a stern expression.

The twins looked to me for guidance, but I was at a loss. We managed to accomplish what we set out to do, getting away from Pierce and Kingsrose, even if we were now down one of our own. Two if I counted abuelita. But what was next?

"Wasn't the plan to make sure to keep Rosie away from Pierce?" Kai asked sheepishly.

Del nodded. "Yes, and we did that, but what now? Do we keep camping for the rest of our lives so Pierce can't get to her?"

"Well, if the gift is connected to the Wolf Moon, then maybe the Wolf Moon itself will unlock whatever power is inside of Rosie," Kao pointed out.

"It's the start of October now, so that means we have roughly three months until the Wolf Moon arrives," Kai said.

Three months. What was supposed to happen when the Wolf Moon was up? What would happen to me, or my mates? Too bad Mother Moon never gave us an instruction manual about how to work the Wolf Moon’s gift. I wish abuelita was around to ask her about it. She was the one who told us about the gift in the first place. She knew more about it than anybody here. I hoped she was okay.

"So let me get this straight," Del commented dryly. "Our plan is to wait it out until the Wolf Moon to do something. Are you guys seriously okay with waiting that long for something to happen? You don't even know what the gift is or what it does, but you're willing to gamble everything on it?"

I hated to admit it but Del had a point. There was no telling what would happen the night of the Wolf Moon, and there were a lot of factors to consider. I highly doubted Pierce would wait that long to retrieve me. I wouldn't be surprised if he was out looking for me now. Plus, there was no telling what was happening to Joaquin while we were in hiding.

Joaquin...
