I still hadn't gotten over how much Byron changed his tune, but I was liking it. He seemed more relaxed and composed than he ever did when he served under Pierce's reign. "Have you been thinking about what Sabina told you? About possibly mating with Rosie?"
Byron stiffened. "I have."
"And?"
"And... if she hasn't chosen Rowan, I will ask her if she would consider me for a mate."
My eyes widened in surprise. "Really? You'll do it?"
"Only if she'll have me, but like I said, it depends on what'll happen between her and Rowan." Bryon looked away as his hands balled into fists. "She deserves to be with whoever she wants."
"You've fallen for her, haven't you?" I asked after a moment of silence, minus the growling wolf in the cellar.
Byron stood frozen for so long I wasn't sure he heard me. I was about to ask again when he finally spoke up, his voice raw and honest. "I think so."
I was elated by his words, but also stunned by his revelation. Byron had never loved another person before meeting Carly, and never fully moved on since her passing. I worried for my friend. I wanted him to find happiness, but I understood how hard it was for him. And now, to hear that he might have found a second chance at love, I couldn't be more thrilled for him.
"I can't tell you how happy I am to hear you say that, bro," I said, reaching over and patting him on the back.
Byron quirked a brow at me. "You're happy to hear I'm into your mate?"
I snorted. "Sure, it sounds weird when you say it like that, but Rosie is meant to have four mates after all. Besides, even if she didn't have this destiny and chosen you because simply for wanting you, it doesn't mean I'm losing her. It means that our little family is getting larger."
"Interesting way to put it, but I get what you're saying, and I appreciate it. But I don't think it'll happen."
"Why not?" I asked.
"You heard what Kao said the other day. Rosie's pining hard for Rowan. How am I supposed to compete with that?" Byron groaned, his face falling into his hands. "Listen to me. The first woman I feel attracted to, who already has three other mates, and I'm worried that I'll lose her to a fourth man. How is this my life?"
I threw my head back with a laugh. "Honestly, man, I don't know what to tell you. Nothing about our lives is normal, but it sure isn't boring."
"Ain't that the truth. I feel like we could use a boring life after this mess clears up though.”
That was something I could get behind. I'm sure we could all use some time to relax and wind down after this. Hopefully we'd get to have that.
"We'll just have to take it one day at a—" My sentence was cut off by the sudden howl coming from Kai's Berserker Wolf. Byron and I stilled, wondering what just happened. Kai let out another howl, this one sent a shiver running down my spine in alarm.
"Kai?" Byron moved closer to the cell. "Kai, buddy, what's wrong?"
"I think he senses something." Right as I said that, my phone started vibrating in my pocket. I pulled it out and checked the caller ID with a frown. "Private number."
"You think it's a coincidence?"
My gut was telling me no, but there was only one way to find out. I hit answer and put the phone to my ear. "Hello?"
"Hello, brother."
My whole body shuddered at the menacing grumble that responded. "Pierce."
Byron's eyes widened when I said my stepbrother’s name but stayed quiet as I put the phone on speaker. Pierce's voice echoed throughout the basement. "Ah, so you do remember me."
"How could I forget? You're the one planning an all-out massacre on Kingsrose," I said.
Pierce laughed. "So, the rumors were true, my most loyal beta turned his back on me and joined you guys. Honestly, I expected it to happen sooner, but hey, you can never tell with these things, am I right?"
My brow furrowed at his statement. He knew Byron would join us? How? Not even Byron knew that he would.
"And I hear you had quite the little initiation party last month," Pierce continued. "That damn Rosie. First, she steals you and the twins, then rejects me as her mate, and now you guys stole my territory and most of my pack. Tell me, Joaquin, is there anything else you plan to take from me?"
