“Old football injury?”

She looked up at him, frowning. What? Football? What on earth was he on about?

“Sorry,” he said, giving his head a little shake. “Bad joke.”

“Ahh.” She chuckled. “I get it. No, old skydiving injury.”

His eyebrows rose. “Skydiving? You’re braver than me.”

“You’ve never done it?”

“I’m scared of heights.”

She laughed. Couldn’t help herself.

He grinned. “Your subtle compassion at my flaw is noted.”

“If it helps, I’m scared of…” She petered off. What was she scared of? Maybe the ground? Landing on it incorrectly? Having her heart broken again? God, that was so lame.

And yet so true.

“Finishing sentences?” Owen offered.

She snorted, shutting out the unsettling thought as she rubbed at her hip again.

Her hand slid over something hard, and her stomach dropped. “Ah shit,” she muttered, pulling her phone from the costume’s pocket.

She held it up, sighing as water dribbled from it.

“That doesn’t look good.”

Giving her phone a little shake, she grimaced at Owen. “Nope. Hopefully, it really is as waterproof as the marketing says it is.” She swiped her thumb over the screen, and her phone woke up. “Hey, look at that. It survived.”

He laughed.

“Give me a sec?” she asked, opening up her text thread with Elisa and Zeta.

“Go for it.”

She studied him for a moment, chewing on her bottom lip. Go for it. What an apt instruction for tonight. Once she got him back to the apartment, she definitely planned on going for it, dodgy hip or not.

Hey, she tapped out a message with her thumbs. Simon pushed me into the pool. And then Owen pushed Simon into the pool. It’s been fun. I’m wet. In more ways than one. Going back to our place to strip off. Taking Owen with me. I cannot be held responsible for what you might walk in on if you come back within the hour. You have been warned. Love you both. Stay safe. Have fun. B. xo

She added the umbrella emoji and hit send.

“Done,” she said, shoving her phone back into her damp pocket. “Ready?”

Before he could answer, she snagged his hand and started walking again.

“So, really a skydiving accident?” he asked, falling in beside her.

“Yeah.” She nodded, liking more than she probably should the way he casually linked their fingers together. “I landed badly.”

“Do you skydive often?”

“I’m an instructor.”

A low chuckle rumbled from him. “That explains it.”
