I lean into his chest and my fingers wrap up in the soft sweater he’s wearing. “I hope so. I really do. She’s always been so reliable. This is just not like her.”
The bells over the door ring and Bri steps inside, worry etched on her face. “Nothing?”
“No. And I’m really starting to worry.”
“She’ll be alright. She probably just needed to get away from everyone. All the sympathetic looks and calls from the church ladies.”
“Yeah.” I shake my fears off. “By the way, Bri. I believe I saw James talking to you yesterday.”
She stiffens, eyeing my smug smile. “Yeah. Just yapping like he always does.”
“That’s funny. I thought he asked you out.”
“Nope!” she pops the p, turning to run for the door. “I gotta go. Got rounds today.”
“Fine!” I call after her. “But you can’t run from him forever.”
“Bet me,” she growls, slamming the door, the bells tinkling wildly.
“One of these days, he’s gonna get her.”
“Kinda like I got you.”
I lift my arms around his neck, my hips sliding along his, grinning when he groans. “Yeah. Just like that.”
“I hope that guy knows what he’s doing and he doesn’t pull anything like I did. I barely got you to give me another chance.”
“And look at us now.”
“Yeah, look at us now.” He steps back and gets down on one knee.
“Steele,” I whisper breathlessly.
“Baby, I promised you that I’d never hurt you. Not on purpose. The fact that I did with my stupidity is something I’ll have to live with forever. But I want us to start over. I want forever with you. I want to hold you in my arms every night. Listen to you snore.”
“I don’t snore,” I growl.
“Listen to you moaning while I make love to you. And I want every damn minute of the next sixty plus years to be with you. And yeah, I’m a greedy ass because I want them to start as soon as possible. So sue me. After you do the right thing and make an honest man out of me.”
I laugh and throw myself at him, knocking him to the floor, raining kisses all over his face. “I will marry you. Thank god for that damn spell.”
“I would have found you without it.”
“Never hurts to have the universe by your side.” And I kiss him, my lips sealed to his, my hands locked in his hair, tugging wildly.
