"Give me one good reason I shouldn't punch you again. You said you'd be here at ten this morning. Did you look at the clock?" Emilio propped himself up on his desk with both hands and looked at me as if I had committed treason.

I rolled my eyes, which caused a slight pain. My face was still sensitive and swollen in places after his blow last night.

"I needed to catch up on some sleep before we go hunting for the Frenchman," I grumbled, flinging a folded piece of paper at him. "Gia's address. I suggest we start there. I've already been to her car, too, and read out the starting point from the nav. We can stop by there, too. Some building complex on the outskirts of town."

"At least you didn't come empty-handed," Emilio replied, but looked at me again with a sharp warning. I had afforded myself a small reprieve for a short period of time and would need to act like I was inferior to him.

It was better to follow his every wish from his lips instead of listening to my own instincts.

"What time do you have to be at the club today?"

I waved it off. "Doesn't matter. We should find this guy and take him out before he comes back with more of his kind."

"First, I want to have a little chat with him."

"Of course. But you can do that while I beautify his body."

"And you're sure Gia had nothing to do with it?"

Images of last night appeared in my mind's eye. "As safe as one can be in our case."

Sometimes you didn't realize that the enemy was lurking behind you with a knife until it was too late. Occupational hazard, I would say. And exactly what I had already told her in the car.

"And you think it's a good idea to leave her alone in your apartment?"

"I'm not stupid. I called one of my men for extra security."

"For the girl or for your apartment?"

"Both," I grumbled.

I didn't like how strangely she had reacted to the luxury. Not that unusual when you had the means and placed a certain value on your surroundings.

"And do you want to explain to me how it came about that you screwed her, or should I stop asking about it?"

With a scowl, I looked at him. Such comments had given me a fork in the hand. "She wanted it, I wanted it. End of story."

Emilio looked at me with a slight shake of his head. "That just complicates things. You should learn not to put your dick in every woman you come across."

I grimaced, but refrained from commenting on it. In fact, in my eyes, Emilio didn't have the right to pass judgment on it.

But he was the boss , and what the boss said was the law. Whether or not I liked it.

"What about our other brother? I haven't heard from him in ages," I changed the subject seamlessly.

Maybe Vincenzo felt like a little hunt for our newly chosen enemy?

"He's alive and doing his thing."

"As always. Should we let him know what we're working on?"

Emilio shrugged his shoulders. "For my sake, you can try. But if he shows up here grumbling like it's seven days of rainy weather, we might as well attend the next funeral service on the spur of the moment."

I raised an eyebrow. "Where did those words come from? I've never heard anything like that from your mouth when it comes to him."
