"It's not a dirty word."

"I know."

"No French terms of endearment," she growled.

"All right, Lotta."

She hurled the magazine at me, which only made me laugh.

"You're an idiot, Dario de Archard, and sometimes I wonder if they didn't switch my actual brother with you at birth."

"Oh, come on, that's just like you telling me I'm adopted."

"Maybe it's true. We should ask Emilio for your birth certificate."

It was a clever tactic to distract them from the genuine issue– the explosion that could have killed us all had I been just a few seconds too slow.

"And do you have any news?"

"Nothing. I enjoy my life, kicking Emilio's ass and keeping Flavia busy when she's around and he doesn't have the time."

"She still refuses to move out of the cottage?" I asked while chewing on the noodles.

"Oh, she's here more often than she's there, but officially she lives at the cottage and insists on keeping it that way. But just the hassle of the constant back and forth makes the second home redundant."

Only her opinion, whatever it was, didn't matter. "You shouldn't interfere in matters that are none of your business, sis."

"Sometimes I'm quite right. You can't argue with me on that."

"I didn't intend to do that. I just wanted to point out that sometimes it would help so that the house is not so crooked."

Before I could elaborate, I felt my smartphone vibrate in my pocket. I turned away, fished it out and picked up. I balanced the bowl in one hand.

"Yes?"

"Why didn't Emilio ask before doing business with a Frenchman?"

"Nice to hear your voice again, Vince."

"Why didn't he ask?"

"No idea? Because he's the boss and doesn't have to ask anyone?"

"He should have known better."

"How about you clear the issue with him while we look for the guy?"

"Of course. I'll be good enough to take care of the mess." He sounded annoyed.

"Why don't you take your anger out on the one who deserves it?"

"Because I'm just as annoyed with you! Carrying a bomb around as if it were nothing, I can't believe how incredibly stupid you act sometimes!"

Well, maybe I should think more carefully about how I phrased some messages in the future and leave out the part that I thought was cool. Experience had shown that this elicited the opposite reaction from my siblings.
