And he looked furious.

Zane

My jaw clenchedas I watched Celeste talk and laugh with Greg Selcott.

“You’re going to crack a tooth,” Kye said around a mouthful of cheese and bacon fries.

“I’ll crack your face in a minute if you don’t shut the fuck up.”

That only made him smirk harder.

Asshole.

“Shouldn’t you be pulling your overprotective big brother bullshit? Chloe and Warner look pretty close.”

“Nah, he knows if he so much as looks at her, I’ll break his legs.”

“He’s looking,” Nix said.

“The fuck he is. They’re talking.”

“Talking, right. About all the freaky, wild sex they’re going to be hav—”

“Nix.” Harleigh gave him a disapproving look.

“What?” He shrugged. “Asshole deserves it. What do you think, Miller? You think he’s got that look in his eye?”

It was a dick thing to say. Especially since we’d all picked up on some tension between him and Chloe. But Nate had played it down. I didn’t know whether it was because Chloe was more interested in him than he was her, or because he didn’t want to overstep with Kye.

“I think she can talk to whoever the hell she wants,” he replied a little too harshly.

Oh, he cared all right. He just didn’t want Kye to know.

“Okay, kids.” Coach Farringdon stood, and the room hushed into silence. “First things first, you played a good game tonight. Represented yourselves and the team with the professionalism and pride I know you all possess. It doesn’t matter if football is in your future, what matters is you play the season out in a way so that win or lose, you can hold your heads high. And you did it, you put this team—our team—in the playoffs.”

Everyone began stamping their feet and banging their fists on the tables, chanting, ‘Hawks, Hawks, Hawks’.

“Okay, okay, quiet down.” Coach whipped off his ball cap and ran a hand through his hair. “Finish up your food, go use the John and grab a drink for the road. Twenty minutes, I want you all back on the bus or your sorry ass will get left behind.”

“Thank fuck. I need some sleep,” I said, glancing over at Celeste again.

An unfamiliar sensation surged inside of me as I watched Greg casually drape his arm over the back of the booth of where she was sitting.

“You know, if she keeps coming around, one the guys will make a move—”

“Carter,” I growled.

“Yeah, yeah, you don’t care. Already got that memo.” He stuffed the last couple of fries in his mouth and got out of the booth. “I drank too much soda.” He stalked off toward the hall leading to the restrooms.

The hall where I’d intercepted Celeste. Where I’d made the colossal fucking mistake of putting my mouth on hers.

But I’d thought… shit, I don’t know what I’d thought. She was just looking at me with those big blue eyes of hers, staring at me like I was worth something.

Fucking idiot.

I needed to get a grip.

Girls like Celeste only fooled around with guys like me to get their kicks. Their taste of the bad boy before they were swept off their feet by some pretentious entitled douchebag.
