I scrambled away from him, smoothing down my clothes and hair as I slid back into my seat.

“Mmm, you even taste expensive.” He licked his fingers clean. It should have been hot watching him do that, but I only felt cheap.

“I… I think you should go.” Dejection roiled in my stomach.

This was a mistake.

Thinking I could play by his rules was a mistake.

A dark chuckle rumbled in his chest. “See you around, Einstein. Thanks for the ride.” He climbed out without so much as a backward glance and disappeared into the shadows.

While I sat there trying to catch my breath…

And soothe my bruised heart.

“What happened to you?” Max said the second I entered the kitchen.

“Nothing, why?”

“You look… different.”

“I’m fine.” I ducked behind the refrigerator door to grab a carton of juice. “Where have you been tonight?”

“Shouldn’t I be asking you that question?” He arched a brow as I leaned against the counter.

“I was out with some friends.”

“What friends? Last time I checked you had Harleigh and Miles, and Harleigh left and Miles—”

“You’re an ass.”

“What? I’m just stating facts. I know you weren’t with Miles because I heard Marcy Gerard telling everyone they had a date. And Nix was with Harleigh because he texted me to—”

“Nix texted you?”

“Yeah, so?”

“I didn’t realize the two of you were friends now.”

Max shrugged. “He mainly texts about training, but we talk occasionally. It’s not a big deal.”

To him.

It wasn’t a big deal to him.

But to me, it was just more evidence that Max was more involved in their lives than I was.

Strangely, I was more bothered about that than hearing Miles was on a date with Marcy.

“Were you with Chloe? I won’t tell if you were.”

“No, actually.” I let out a heavy sigh. “It’s kind of lame but I went to the movies on my own.” The lie soured on my tongue, but it wasn’t like I could tell him the truth.

“That is lame. Jesus, Sis,” he chuckled, “you need to get out more.”

I leveled him with a hard look. “We can’t all be social butterflies like you.”
