Stupid or not, they were still my orders, so I was obliged to follow them. I might not always like them, but I had a duty.

What about a duty to me, my dick moaned.

The fucker didn't get a say.

"Sorry. We'll have to do a few of these. Go out, have dinner, look the part."

She took a deep breath and sat back, a small frown creasing the center of her forehead.

"What is it?"

" I thought we were actually getting to know each other here. Becoming friends, you know, since you are protecting me and all that. It would be nice to get along. To be friends. I thought that's what you wanted. And then you tell me that we've got paparazzi watching so you kiss me. I don't like it."

Fuck. I wasn't sure why, but she was mad. Very, very mad.

"Kaya, I'm sorry. I thought that after you signed all the paperwork the other day you understood."

I watched her press her lips together and then take a long, deep breath as if she was looking for just the right thing to say. "Yes. But maybe your sister, Adrianna's right, you know nothing about women, or at the very least this one. When someone says they want to be my friend, want to spend time with me, I expect that to be genuine, not because they're getting something out of it."

Ah fuck. She started to push to her feet, and I reached for her hand. "I'm sorry, Kaya. I didn't communicate that to you very effectively."

"You did not. Hence, my surprise and confusion."

Why the fuck was she confused? "I'm sorry. I should have made it clearer that we needed some exposure, okay? It just seemed like a perfect moment, and I went for it. I won't touch you again."

She sighed. "It's not about the touching. It's about the ineffective communication, you twat."

It was my turn to frown. "Ineffective communication?"

She threw up her hands. "See, your intended thing of the paparazzi catching the perfect picture is about to fail because you're pissing me off. If you look at a woman like you want tokiss her, and then you do kiss her, but then you pull back and tell her, 'Oh, it was all for show,' she's going to be upset about it."

I frowned. "You understood, Kaya. We're not doing this."

"Yes, I understood. But, you blathering idiot, youkissedme. So yes, it's confusing."

And then I understood. I'd been signaling it for several days. The want, the need. And let's face it, I wanted her to look. I wanted her to see it.

Kaya was on her feet, already marching toward the other table where the guards were. "I'd like to go home."

Fuck. I ran after her. "Kaya. Kaya! Hold on. I'm sorry. I fucked up."

"Look, Jasper, it's already confusing enough. Let's not make it worse. I get it now. We're friends. Nothing more. Every time you give me that look, I'll know that you don't mean it."

"That's not what I said. Of course, I—"

She was already turning on her heel and stalking away from me.

"What the fuck, Kaya?"

"I'm exhausted. I'd like to get back."

I'd ruined the perfect day, and I needed to catch up to her and make it up before I ruined the day forever. But before I could catch her, my phone rang. "Trevor. Mate, what is it? I'm in the middle of something today."

"Sorry to be a party pooper on your one day off, but we have problems."

"What do you mean?"

"Dad is running around telling anyone who will listen that your newly announced engagement will never last. And that is all the publicity that we're getting out of it so far."
