Heat suffused my skin. I knew he didn't mean it likethat, but still, there was that growl in his voice, and it felt like he'd meant it that way. I knew better, but my body apparently did not. Damn it.
He eyed me suspiciously. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing. Nothing's wrong, okay?”
“Where is it?"
"It's here by the shed. Might as well get this over with."
"So what was it like growing up here?"
I sighed because I knew how this was going to go. He wanted to talk this through, but honestly, it was the last thing I wanted. "It was fine. Just chaotic."
"What do you mean by chaotic?"
I turned around. "Can we not do this right now?”
"Fair enough."
"Thank you."
"But maybe you can tell me something about yourself later. Like if you're still in touch with the family."
"Yeah. My foster mother and sisters were lovely. Young though. They still call for… you know, help sometimes."
"But you’re a student."
"Yeah, but I have a job. It's just for little shit. You know, baubles and candies and that sort of thing. I'm happy to do it."
"But you don't see them often."
I shook my head. "No, I don't."
I marched to the side of the shed and grabbed one of the shovels that was hanging on the deck.
Saint held out his hand. "Give me that."
"I can shovel myself."
"Right, sure you can." But still, he shrugged off his coat, handing it over and putting his palm back out for the shovel. His shirt sleeves were rolled up, exposing his forearms, and he looked delectable. Good enough to eat.
He already made it clear that he's not interested, so back the fuck off.
Right. My raging libido had unfortunately been woken up. Stupid kiss.
I was going to have to put that bitch to sleep again.

He shoveled, making quick work of the job, and had quite a pile of dirt before long. The plastic covering that I'd put the box into was still intact. The files looked intact as well.
"Yeah, that's it."
"Well, that wasn't too hard."
"Not if—"
Suddenly, my foster mother called out, "Is someone there?"
