"It's too complicated. She needs protection. I'm trying to give it to her."

Yeah, you want to protect her with your dick.

Adrianna lifted a brow. "Jesus fucking Christ. You would ruin everything. You are so stuck in the past with Elise and Father. You have a real chance at actually having something and look atyou fucking it up. Just call the girl. You know, take her on a date. Take security and take her out. Woo her. Move on from Elise. Make this real and maybe you don't have to tell her anything. Don't lie, hide, and try not to move forward. That’s not fair for her, and it sucks for you."

I did not want to think about this. "I cannot believe I’m having this conversation with you two."

Why was this so fucking difficult?

I just wanted to get one more go at Lohman, wanted to get a better lead on who was coming for her. I wanted to cement our relationship better.

“Maybe.” I sighed. "Fine, already. I'll talk to her."

Even Trevor had advice for me. "Mate, I hate to say it, but Adrianna is right. You're so stuck on Elise and righting some imaginary wrong. You weren't the one who wronged her. She wronged all of us. The people she was involved with, dragging Dad into it too, it was just a mess. You weren’t here. You were doing the queen’s work. Fair enough, but had you been here, it would have been even uglier because she would have dragged you and Dad down with her. She was bad news from the get-go."

"Then how the fuck did I not see that?" I whirled at my siblings. "I should have known. I should have seen it all coming at us."

Trevor shrugged. "I actually thought she was kind of likethat airline hostess from three months ago who was married. Remember that ordeal I had? How was I supposed to know her husband was going to come looking for me? I will say though, being in this chair certainly saved my life. He didn't actually believe that I could shag the shit out of his wife." He winked and spun around in a swivel. "Little did he know the things I can get up to in this chair."

My lips twitched and I shook my head. "Mate, you are so fucking wrong."

"My point is… Actually, I don't have a point. I just wanted you to know that I shagged a fucking fit airline hostess in this chair. You should have seen her tits bouncing with every rock of this thing."

Adrianna gagged. "I hate you so much."

Trevor winked at her. "You love me because you have to. But it’s still fun to tick you off."

"You're obviously itchy and antsy and want to see her Jasper, so just see her. Let go of Elise. If you’d focus on who the world thinks you're going to marry, you might actually find happiness. Yes, you could save her arse, too, and you both would be the better for it.”

I groaned. "Fine. I'm going to see her now. She's with her friend, but I'll go pick her up for brunch and talk to her."

I hit my quick dial on Rook’s number. He answered right away.

"Mate, who do you have on Kaya? I'm headed over to Gemma’s. I want to take her to brunch. How long since they’ve checked in?"

"Mate, I've been trying to reach you for the last thirty minutes."

"Sorry. I was in weekly meeting. What's wrong?"

"It's Kaya. She and that mate of hers have done a runner."

Kaya

"Come on,” Gemma said. “We're going to go knock on the door."

I had said I wanted to do this, right? But standing there, now I wasn't so sure. My feet were planted and rooted to the pavement.

The neighborhood was residential. Somewhere in the distance, children played and laughed.Cars drove by. People speaking Croatian. Some English. I heard a couple of passersby speaking French too. We were at the address in my mother's papers. The one that maybe led to nowhere had actually led to somewhere in Croatia, and now I couldn't move forward.

If I opened that door and she was there, I’d know I’d been abandoned. If I didn’t open the door, she was still just missing and could come back at any time. I could step forward to see if this was my destiny, or I could move backward, run away, and hide. I was locked in place, not knowing what to do.

Gemma put her hand on my shoulder. "Hey, we don't have to do this. We can turn around and go back to the hotel."

I slid her a glance. "I'm not afraid."

"Honey, even with all that gorgeous brown skin of yours, I can see you’re flushed. And you’ve got that wild look in your eye like you want to run. It's okay to run. You've seen it. You've been here. You can come back any time you want. Ask questions later."

"Are you really going to let me run?"
