"I'll show you land." I shoved him toward the plane. "Get on the plane. We need to find her."

The next three hours were tense and tight. It was all I could do to not jump out of my skin as I waited, so I tried to focus on the task at hand. When we landed in Zagreb, there was a car already waiting to take us to the smaller town of Petina, fifteen kilometers away.

Westin was on his computer in no time, hooking up to our Rogues comm team. We pinpointed an area where the signal on the tracker was the strongest. Driving into a residential area, we pulled up to the location just as Kaya and Gemma were leaving a house. An elderly woman, probably in her early sixties, gave them both a hug and waved them off.

Who the fuck was that?

I took the photos while Rook was trying to run facial recognition. “What do you want us to do, boss? Stay? Investigate?”

My gut twisted. We could stay. It would probably be wise to get information from the woman, but I was too worried about Kaya. "No, follow."

"Yes, boss. Whatever you say."

I could have sworn I saw him smirk. Unfortunately, it looked like Kaya and Gemma were headed back toward Zagreb. That didn't make any sense unless they were already going back totheir hotel. Were they going to meet someone, or was something else happening? What the fuck was going on here?

About five minutes from the center of downtown, Rook frowned. "We have company. Or rather, the girls have company."

I could see a dark sedan, trailing. Watching them.

"How do you want to handle this?" Rook asked.

"Fuck, let me think. She doesn't know we're following her. They're not taking any precautions, so they don't know they're about to get ambushed. Where's the car?"

"Two cars back now. We're going to have to make a move if we want to deal with them."

In my comms, I spoke to the other Rogues in our follow car. "Car two, black sedan out back." And then I rattled off the plates. "Cut them off."

In thirty seconds, I could hear the revving of an engine and screeching tires. They’d blocked the car. Or tried to. But then the sedan whipped around them and was still behind us, only four cars between us now.

“Fuck.”

From the passenger seat, Rook nodded.

"Yeah. But hang on to your hat. We're going to make this very difficult."

As the car approached, I waited. The light above was turning yellow, and the sedan was trying to beat it. But before it could, I pulled the emergency brake and spun, hitting the car as it approached on my left, and hitting another, making sure to stay locked with that one.

When the light turned red, we could see that Kaya's car had turned right down the road. The black sedan still tried to lunge forward, but I’d kept the spin going just long enough until I hit a hydrant and pinned them in.

When I turned to Rook, he stared at me. "Are you completely insane?"

"The question you should be asking is, who the fuck are these idiots? And why are they following Kaya?"

KAYA

I wasn't exactlysneakingback home. I was merely returning from being out with a friend… stealthily.

You're totally sneaking back home, and it’s not even your home.

Ugh. I hated my brain. My mind was a soupy sea of questions, worry, considerations, and more questions. My mother was alive, or at least she had been as recently as six months ago. So what the hell had happened to her? She'd built a whole house for me, in a place that I had never even known existed. How was I supposed to confront that? Would she have ever let me know she was alive if I hadn’t come looking?

As my brain tried to sort out all of the questions rolling around in my head, I was doubly distracted. Saint had been on me to get back to class, back to meeting at least one of my life’s goals. I had to study as I had a major fucking exam waiting for me.

And you have a wedding to get ready for.

A fake wedding to my very fake fiancé. I wasn't really going through with marrying him.

When I entered the building, Westin Rourke met me. He nodded at the two security guys who’d dropped me off after Gemma and I snuck back into her apartment. He said, "I'll take it from here, mates. Nice weekend, Kaya?"
