That was that.

My mind was made up.

I wasn’t going to be my brother. I was going to be a mature adult about it.

“Good morning.”

I blinked, jerking out of the hole I’d dug myself inside my head, and focused on the handsome, auburn-haired gentleman who’d greeted me. “Oh, good morning.”

“Sorry.” He smiled. “I didn’t mean to disturb you.”

I waved a hand dismissively. “You didn’t. I was in my own little world, that’s all.”

“You’re the author, aren’t you?”

I pressed my lips into a thin line, and he chuckled.

“Sorry. It’s Ellie, isn’t it? My sister is a fan of your books. She says they’re brilliant.”

My cheeks flushed lightly. “Well, please tell her I said thank you.”

He nodded, then approached the steps and stopped at the bottom of them, using it to stretch out one of his legs. “I’d come and introduce myself properly, but I’ve been running. Fred Coventry.”

“Max’s guest, right?” I questioned, tilting my head to the side.

Fred’s eyebrows shot up. “How do you know that?”

“Somewhere in the middle of our childish bickering yesterday I think we managed something that vaguely resembled a conversation, and he mentioned a guest.”

He chuckled, uncapping his water bottle. “He’s not always the easiest to get along with.”

“No shit,” I muttered, making him laugh again. “Sorry. I’m not always the easiest person myself, so it’s interesting.”

“You must have done quite the number on him. Esme mentioned you this morning, and he told her… What was it? Ah, yes, not to mention your bloody name and walked out.”

I bit the inside of my cheek. “It’s been a rough couple of days,” I replied slowly.

Something was very amusing about this to him because he was still laughing. “He’ll come around. He always does. I’m sure whatever you said to him couldn’t have been that bad.”

“No. Not really. I’m generally much nicer than him.” If you ignore that I offed a pixel version of him.

“So what did you do, then? You kiss him?”

I froze.

Fred eyed me. “I was kidding.”

“I didn’t kiss him,” I said honestly.

Hekissedme.

Technicalities were important.

Fred nodded. “He kissed you.”

“I think it was an accident, to be fair.”

“What did he do? Trip on a rug and land on your mouth?”
