No, it wasn’t an almost.

Iwasgoing to throw up.

“I can explain,” I said quickly, flattening my hands against my body.

Kev looked Max up and down appreciatively. “I was hoping you’d say that.”

Max cleared his throat and looked at me, confused.

My eyes widened. “Oh, um, this is my brother. Kevin.” I waved my hand uncomfortable. “Kevin, this is Max.”

Kev smirked. “And who is Max?”

“Shut up or I’m sending you home,” I snapped.

Max coughed and took a step forwards. “I think I’ll leave you to it,” he said, catching my eye. “Kevin, it was nice to meet you.” He held out his hand.

Kevin looked at it. “With all due respect, you’ve just been groping my sister.”

Oh, my God.

“I’m not touching that.”

Max grimaced. “You could have knocked.”

“I could have, but then I’d have missed that juicy bit of gossip. If your ears burn, it’s just me making her talk about you all night.”

“He’s crazy,” I mouthed to Max, doing the finger-twist by my ear. You know, the universal sign for crazy.

My brother shot me a look that said he didn’t appreciate that, but I didn’t care. I didn’t appreciate him barging in here when I was getting turned on faster than Blackpool Illuminations.

Max glanced at me one more time before quickly making an exit, and the moment the door shut behind him, I turned on Kevin.

“What the hell?” I asked, throwing my hands out to my sides. “What’s wrong with you? One, you were supposed to let me know when you were almost here, and two, you can’t just barge in here! I could have been doing anything!”

His lips curved into a slick smile. “Youwere, though, weren’t you?”

“Shutup!” I grabbed a cushion from the sofa and launched it across the room at him. “Kevin! Do you have any idea how long it’s been since I had sex? Good sex?”

“Three years, ten months, one week, and six days.”

Probably.

“I could have ended that drought tonight! I could be on that sofa with a duke’s face between my legs right now if you hadn’t bounced in here like bloody Tigger!” I jabbed my finger in the direction of the sofa to punctuate my point.

“Oh, he’s theduke? Well, bugger me backwards.”

“Kevin!”

“You do a wonderful Catherine O’Hara impression.”

“I swear to God—” I walked around the tables towards him then stopped and took a deep breath.

“Hey, don’t blame me. I didn’t expect you to be in here snogging a duke, did I?” Kev finally shrugged off his jacket. “Is he single?”

“No, he’s married,” I deadpanned. “That’s why I was snogging him.”

“Ah, just as well.” His eyes twinkled teasingly. “So. Snogging the duke, eh? You’re taking the book research a bit literally, don’t we think?”
