“Let us know if you need anything. Feel better soon.”

Do I need anything? I need Will to hold me through the night.

I need him to tell me the sex wasn’t just about blackmail. It wasn’t just about fucking. It meant he cared about me, as crazy as that sounds. Even though he just paid me to go away.

I was essentially an overpriced escort for him. Too expensive. Too inexperienced. A bad deal.

A man like Will Leblanc didn’t become successful by making bad deals.

You deserve somebody better, sweetheart. I’m not that guy. I’m a monster. You don’t want me. I promise.

Is that what he really thinks about himself? Is that why he’s staying away from me?

I have to find out. Because it’s not going to end like this. Without even a conversation? With Will afraid to touch me? No. I have to find out if there’s a chance he cares about me, too.

I stride to the front door of the apartment, pull it open, and stick my head into the hall. There are six guards wearing suits and earpieces outside, probably armed to the teeth, though I can’t see any weapons.

“Carrie?”

One of the two women on the team today moves quickly down the hall and meets me at the door. “What can I do for you, Ms. Anderson?”

“I need to run an errand in the city. Could you wait inside with the twins?”

Mia and Ben have both tiptoed into the kitchen behind me. “Where are you going?” asks Mia.

“I’ll be right back. I just need to talk to my boss about something.”

“Of course, Ms. Anderson.” Carrie steps inside.

“Eggo waffles,” I tell the twins. “As many as you want. I’ll be back in an hour. I’m taking my phone.”

Phone. Purse. Nothing else. Except for a boatload of courage. That’s how much it takes to face Will after he basically fired me.You’re beautiful and sweet and delicate. I’m going to break you. That’s what he said to me, battered and bruised. Does he really think he’ll hurt me?

An ache in my chest says it’s too late. He’s already hurt me. I’m already broken.

Another agent walks me out to a waiting car.

I give the driver the address for Summit.

It’s a different story riding in a plush SUV. There’s nobody else to stare at me or jostle me or catcall me while I keep it together.

Sidewalk. Main lobby. Elevator. The agent gazes professionally into space while we ride up.

The doors open, and I step out into chaos.

Absolute chaos.

People with boxes fill the lobby, waiting for the elevator. They cross back and forth, calling to one another. Even the receptionist is on her feet. She flips through files in her filing cabinet, loading them into one box. Supplies go into another. The quiet, beautiful lobby has transformed into a packing frenzy.

Her eyebrows go up as I approach the desk. “Ms. Anderson.”

“I need to speak to Mr. Leblanc. There might have been some confusion about my being out today, so—”

“He’s not in.” The receptionist gives me an apologetic smile. “We’re spending the day packing up, but there’s nothing on his schedule. He’s already on site at our new offices.”

My own smile is frozen in place. “No meetings?”

“No. He signed the paperwork for the merger with Hughes. It’s all said and done.” A little laugh. “So that was quick. Anyway, he said he’d be unavailable. Probably settling in over there. We’re packing up fast. Supposed to vacate these premises by midnight.”
