A meeting invitepops up on my screen. The bar at the top flashes red.
Finn Hughes has added a meeting to my schedule. It’s in five minutes.
A vivid scene of getting to box Finn Hughes instead plays in my mind. Me, summoned like some middle manager. I pin bitter, ridiculous resentment in an abandoned warehouse in my head and get up to leave.
“Back soon,” I tell Candy.
Unless I walk out of this building and keep walking. That’s not a thing I can do. I’m the guy who stays in the ring until they have to drag his unconscious ass out by the ankles. I’m the guy who sees an opponent like Mountain Man and thinksperfect.
Finn Hughes’s office is several floors up. His secretary waves me past her and into an office that’s way too conservative for a guy Finn’s age. Which is also about my age. He sits behind a big executive desk that somehow makes him look even younger. Why is he even here when his dad is only in his fifties? I’d ask if I cared. The fact that Finn puts in more hours as acting CEO than his father seems to as CEO doesn’t affect my deal with Hughes Financial Services.
I don’t have it in me to exchange bullshit small talk, so I stride to his desk and make the first move. “It’s patently uncool that you fucked me over.”
Finn raises his eyebrows. “Care to explain?”
