Finn’s gaze flicked to her mouth.

She suddenly felt as if the world around them was holding its breath. The wind through the trees, the faint sound of crickets, everything stilled and all she could feel was the mad thumping of her heart. What was happening here?

Her cell phone shrilled in her purse, snapping her back to reality. Cora dug through it and the name across the screen was like a dash of cold water over her head. Liam. She pressed her lips together and told Finn, “I should get going. Thanks again for driving me tonight.”

He ducked his head, an expression ghosting across his face too quickly for her to catch. When he glanced back up, he gave her his usual boyish smile. “Anytime, Cora.”

A moment later, a text message popped up on her screen.

I’m sorry I didn’t make it tonight.

That was it. No explanations, no dog-ate-my-homework excuses, just “sorry.”

Her cat gave a soft meow and hopped onto her bed.

Cora sighed heavily. “It’s too little, too late, amirite?”

Angel turned his back and started grooming himself.

She smoothed the fur between his ears. “Traitor.”
