The blond angel flicked the tip of his wing and the pillow sailed back to land neatly in the corner of the sofa. He turned to his companion near the bookcase. “He throws tantrums like a young child.”

“Give him time,” the other one said gently. “He can learn.”

“He doesn’t have time to squander.”

“Why are you both here, then?” Liam said, flinging his hands in the air. “I thought angels were supposed to be messengers of goodwill, or beacons of light and hope.”

The blond angel’s lashes flickered, and Liam got the feeling it was the celestial equivalent of an eye roll. “We are here to remind you to focus. To stay on task because every choice you make, every action, creates a ripple effect that will steer the course of your journey. Do you understand?”

“Sure,” Liam said flatly. “Actions. Ripples. Got it.”

The blond angel tipped his face to the ceiling and sighed. Then he glanced sharply toward the window. “She comes.”

“Goodbye, rogue.” The other angel dropped an armful of books beside Liam on the sofa. His somber expression held an ocean of pity. “I do hope you find your way.”

“So that’s it, then,” Liam said angrily as they backed into a wall of mist. “Just a ‘Fine luck, you,’ and off you go?”

They disappeared right before Cora unlocked the front door.
