She winced. Trust a smart guy to get straight to the point. “Partially. I have a hard time trusting anyone after what Mason did, but that’s not the only reason.”
“Then what is?”
Gah, did she actually have to spell it out for him?
Trust, she reminded herself. It’s about trust. Something he never had with his ex.
“I have dated a few men over the years. The relationships never progressed very far. I’ve been told I’m not ‘long-term relationship material.’ Apparently, I’m ‘fun to be with’ at the beginning, but after a while, I become ‘too much.’ Those are direct quotes.”
“Bullshit,” he snapped, and she couldn’t help but feel a little gratified. “That’s ridiculous. Any guy who said that doesn’t deserve you and isn’t man enough to handle you. While I’m on the topic, you said before that Mason made you out to be a desperate fat girl. I fucking love your body. You’re sexy, and confident, and turn me on. Size doesn’t play a part, and I’ll gladly shout it from the rooftops.”
Heat flashed downward, taking her by surprise. Could she adore this man any more than she did in this instant? “Thank you, and don’t worry, I know that now. But try telling it to an eighteen-year-old with D-cups and a big ass who’s being laughed at by everyone in the cool crowd.”
“The things I’d like to do to that ass....” His voice was husky and low, sending a shiver up her spine, and her nipples tightened in response. He cleared his throat. “I don’t care what a bunch of idiot kids said—or any of your brainless exes. I want you to be the woman in my life.”
“That’s lucky.” She smiled, finally beginning to feel the first threads of hope. “Because I’m serious about you, and I trust you.” She bit back the words I love you. It was too early for that, wasn’t it? They may have known each other for years, but their relationship was very new. She’d hold onto that confession for another time.
