“Before his passing, my grandfather told me we all have a dream of our perfect mate at some point in our life. Just after the battles where your brother fell was when I started dreaming of you.” My heart melts, listening to the words falling from his lips. I’m stunned that he saw me before he knew me.

His large hand encompasses the brass knob on the door and gives it a turn, pushing the door open wide for me to see inside the room. The room itself is beautiful. Stained glass covers the windows, the walls of made of unique stones in various shapes and colors. The floor is covered in pelts from the different animals that he’s hunted over the years. There’s not one stitch of furniture in the room and I feel more at home here than anywhere else I’ve been to date. In the corner of the room, much like in my den, is a pile of furs. I glance at him briefly, then kick off my heels, letting my feet touch the softness of the pelts. Padding slowly across the room, I end up standing before the pile of fur. Egon comes up behind me and places his large hand on my lower back and pulls me to him. I wrap an arm around his waist and then turn to stand in front of him to look up at him.

“This is my actual room, not the one downstairs. That’s for show.” I’m not understanding what he’s telling me, and then it dawns on me.

“You’re more comfortable in your animal skin than the human one, aren’t you?” He gives me a slight nod and I see the fear in his eyes.

He’s afraid that I’ll reject him for his admission. I take his hands in mine and just stare up at him, amazed that somebody understands how I feel. “Then let’s sleep tonight as our animals. Tomorrow we’ll forge the bond as humans.” I nuzzle the underside of his jaw, feeling the coarseness of his beard run across my face.

Egon steps back smiling, probably the happiest I’ve seen him since I accepted him. I watch his fingers nimbly unbutton his shirt. One by one the buttons come undone, and the shirt falls open, exposing his broad lightly furred chest. His pecs are well defined, heading down to his stomach. I can see the slight indent of his abs. He’s completely built like a power lifter, more for strength than beauty. The raw look in his eyes sets me on fire, making me burn for him, watching with confidence as he removes every stitch of clothing. He kicks off his boots and then works on his belt and then the buttons of his slacks. As his pants fall away, I swear that is the largest cock I’ve ever seen in my existence. It looks like it’s a world ender, long and thick even at rest. As I stare at it, it twitches to life and a playful smirk plays on his lips.

“You keep looking at me like I’m dinner and our wolves will never get to know each other tonight.” Double blinking, I blush furiously, having been caught eyeing up my mate. He backs up slightly and then shifts to his large rust-colored wolf. His head is even with my shoulders, and I laugh when he presses his forehead against my chest. Taking the hint, I reach back and undo the zipper holding my dress in place. With little help, the dress falls from my form like blood. The fabric pools at my feet and I step out. I didn’t bother putting on a bra. It made no sense. There was enough support at the top of the dress that it was unnecessary. The only thing I bothered with was the ruby thong. I hook my thumbs into the straps at my hips and turn away from him, then bend forward slowly, letting him watch me bend over to remove my underwear. His wolf whines and before he moves forward, I shift into my wolf.

I stretch the pads of my feet out, feeling this soft fur under my toes, then turn to face him. We’re almost eye to eye size wise. He’s built heavier than I am, but then again, I’m also a female and a different species of wolf. Our animals run their bodies against each other from nose to tail, brushing their entire lengths against each other. Their noses burying into each other’s fur before his wolf herds mine into the pile of fur. I find where I wish to lie down and curl up like I always do to sleep. His wolf curls around mine protectively. I rest my head up on his hip and he does the same. We look like a red yin and yang wolf symbol. That thought alone makes me want to laugh at myself. Feeling his warmth and the safety of the nest that he created, I quickly drift off to sleep safe under the protection of my mate.

Chapter49

Egon

The soundsof birds chirping outside of my window slowly rouse me from the most comfortable, deepest sleep that I’ve had in a very long time. Somehow, over the course of the night, I shifted back to my human form. Bella’s mammoth wolf still lays curled exactly where she laid down. It’s now that I get to study her up close, inspecting the animal my mate can become. Her fur is thicker, almost like an armor upon her body, each hair course and stiff. Her hair kind of reminds me of the stiff bristles of some brooms that they used to clean out the stalls. Hard non-yielding, yet they serve a purpose. As I wiggle my fingers deeper into her pelt the soft, warm undercoat feels like the finest cashmere I’ve ever touched in my entire life. It’s also now that I feel the scars along her back. Ridges of flesh where no hair grows, and I can only assume it is from being whipped. I know this must have taken place in her human form because with this fur of hers, it would never have gotten through.

Her wolf slowly stirs beside me, then turns her head and I swear I can see how sad her animal looks. She shifts back to her human form under my fingers and it’s now that all those scars of her flesh being flayed are bare for me to see. Reverently, I run my fingers gently over the scarred flesh and lean forward and kiss them.

“Why do you do that?” Bella’s whispery voice sounds pained, and I have this intense drive to want to heal every single one of these wounds.

“Each one made you into the woman you are today. How can I not recognize the strength it took to endure all that you did? Most would have broken under this intense punishment. But here you are, still standing strong, trying to do the right thing for our people.” I kiss her bare shoulder and try to hug her to me.

Bella throws me off by rolling onto her side to face me. Her hands come forward to run through the light sprinkling of hair on my chest over my own scars. The ones inflicted on me through battle and war, not punishment.

“What are these from?” she asks as she examines multiple stab wounds and the scars from having blades slice across my muscles.

“The war games. Nothing very interesting, to be honest.” I give her a playful smirk and then laugh softly. “You know the semiannual let’s kick the crap out of each other and see who has a bigger dick thing.” The most musical laugh escapes her lips as she looks down at the scars again.

“Yeah, Ryker was always an enormous baby when he’d come home complaining about how the Earth and Fire Wolves beat him senseless. He didn’t understand why, as the crowned prince he had to do this crap. He always said there’s nothing he needed to prove.” She does the blah blah blah motion with her hand; and I grab it, kissing the palm catching her off guard.

Her breath hitches in her throat as she stares at me in wonder. “What’s the matter? None of these other mates have shown you this level of tenderness.” She glances down at her hand in mine before answering.

“Each of you is tender in your own way. Kaedyn checks on me emotionally. Hollis makes sure that I feel safe in whatever situation I’m in. Sebastian, he’s odd.” A giggle escapes her lips and then she raises her free hand to stop me before I’m able to utter the words I wish to.

“Not odd in that sense, odd because he doesn’t treat me any different from how he would treat anybody else at any given time. He doesn’t treat me as a royal, he doesn’t treat me as anything other than just his mate. We have actual genuine conversations about real things, not the things he thinks I need or want to hear.”

“Do you like that?” I eagerly ask trying to learn her desires before sealing the bond completely. I know it’s easy to break a bond with just a bite mark in place. We cannot break the bond when the actual deed has been done where your souls forge together.

“I honestly do like it.” The tone of her voice tells me she even shocks herself with that answer, and it was probably the most genuine answer I’ve heard uttered from her lips to this point.

“Then I have to ask you.” I stop and wait for her to look at me. Shaking her head, and she pokes me right in my left peck.

“Well, get on with it,” she says as she stares at me.

“What is your favorite color?” The question I pose throws her off, and she stares at me, pondering her answer.

Rolling onto her back, she stares at the ceiling and then closes her eyes. I stare at her, watching the minute movements of the muscles around her eyes and eyebrows as she thinks about what to say.

“It’s difficult for me to describe what my favorite color is,” she says in a whispery tone as she shrugs her shoulders. “It’s more like a time a day than a color specifically.” She pauses between words, trying to sort out exactly how to express what she’s thinking about. She pops her eyes open and turns to look at me.

“Lay back and close your eyes while I describe it to you. It might make more sense.” I lean over and gently kiss her lips before flopping back onto my back.

I feel her move and she scoots herself right up against me, using the ball of my shoulder as a pillow. I wrap my arm around her and hold her flush to my body. It fully heightened my senses with my eyes closed as I feel each breath that she takes and the thudding of her heart against my rib cage. I’m so focused and these little feelings that it barely registers when she speaks.
