“It isn’t their choice. Besides, the women will have just as much power on the council now.” He took my hands and brought them to his mouth, kissing them softly.

“What I’m trying to say, Jessica, is that I love you. You’re the only woman I’ve ever loved, and the only woman I will ever love.” He stepped back then dropped to one knee. “And I want to spend the rest of my life with you by my side, for the whole world to see. I want you as my wife and as my mate.”

My knees felt like jelly, my breath coming in rapid little pants. I looked all around, half panicked that someone was going to protest what was happening and half afraid I was dreaming. But everyone was smiling. Watching. Waiting.

I looked back to Garrett, who was beaming up at me, the love in his eyes shining bright. “What do you say, Jess? Will you marry me?”

A sob bubbled up, and tears filled my eyes. My heart was full to bursting. After everything that had happened, I was finally getting my happy ending. It seemed too good to be true, but as I gazed at Garrett, the love of my life, I realized this wasn’t a happy ending. This was only just the beginning.

“Yes,” I whispered, tears spilling over. “Yes, I’ll marry you.”

Garrett stood, letting out a whoop, and then lifted me and spun me around in circles until I was laughing. When he set me back on my feet, he pulled me close, wrapping his arms around me.

Then he lowered his mouth to mine, kissing me slowly, deeply. I kissed him back, pouring all my love and my passion out for all to see. Because we didn’t have to hide anymore. Garrett was declaring his love for all the world to see. And he’d chosen me.

I gazed up at him as he broke the kiss, amazed that this was really happening. Then a thought hit me. “What would you have done if they had challenged you for your position? Would you really have given it up for me?”

He laughed. “Ouch. You really think I wouldn’t have won?”

“You know what I mean.”

“Yes, Jessica. I would have given it up for you. Though just between us…” he murmured “… I don’t know how Holden would get along without me.”

I shook my head and grinned. “You really do make all your own rules, don’t you?”

He winked. “And you secretly love it.”

“I loveyou,” I whispered, wrapping my arms around his neck and pulling him back for another kiss as everyone looked on.

“And I love you.”

I lost myself in the kiss, my heart so full of love as I embraced the man of my dreams. The man who’d been ready to give it all up for me. Only he didn’t have to. The rest of our lives stretched ahead of us now. Open and free and full of possibility. And we were just getting started.

He’s my protector. And the one shifter I can’t have…

Rumor has it that I’ve bitten off more than I can chew being the first female alpha, and the constant attacks and attempts on my life are becoming exhausting.

When a serious soldier with a charming smile called Ryker steps in to save me, I know I’m in trouble. My only option is to hold a competition to find my mate, so I can unite my pack with a strong man by my side.

With the contest so cutthroat, I’m going to need protection. Ryker is the obvious choice. He can pretend to be a contestant while keeping me safe, even though it’s clear that he doesn’t like the competition.

If he wasn’t so dedicated to his job, I’d think that he was jealous. And if my pack didn’t come before my heart, he’s exactly the sort of capable mate I need by my side.
