“I’m going to go see if I can get some details,” Dr. Laurier said, giving me a nod, then moving off to do so.

Levee showed back up with a bag of books and chocolates and a pair of fuzzy socks.

“I dunno. Eddie suggested it,” he said when I held them up. “He said that ‘Honeys like fuzzy socks,’ and who am I to question him?” Levee said. “Also, got you a coffee,” he said, taking it from Cato as he came in.

“We are hitting some old contacts up from here,” Cato said.

“Did you clear…”

“Yeah. I talked to Huck already.”

“What did he say?”

“That normally he wouldn’t be down for this, but since it’s you, and since we use Dr. Stone and the clinic on occasion, he’s fine with it. And to let him know if we need more manpower.”

“Thanks, guys. I appreciate it. I should have talked to him before sending you out.”

“Hey, you had other shit on your mind,” Cato said shrugging.

“Yeah, man. It’s Ama. We get it,” Levee said, clamping me on the shoulder, then turning to walk away.

I drank my coffee and waited.

Eventually, Dr. Laurier came back out, coming up to me.

“Her brother, huh?” he asked, smirking. “Well, as her brother, I feel I can tell you that Stone is out of surgery and in recovery. In another hour or so, they should move her to a floor. Then you can go and see her.”

“Thanks, man,” I said, nodding. “Anything else?”

“She’s going to be down for a while. Her scans are fine, but she’s probably going to have a raging migraine. And some dizziness on and off for a bit. Not to mention that she won’t be able to use that arm much for at least three or four weeks. Probably more like six. But if I know anything about Stone, she will be back to work sooner than she should be.”

“What choice does she have if there is no one else there?” I asked, tone a bit pointed, and I didn’t give a fuck.

“I will be there. And I will have a talk with my partners about putting in some hours. Just until she is back on her feet again.”

“Make sure of it,” I said, giving him a hard look. “Otherwise, she’s going to be hauling her ass in there, and she needs a fucking break for once.”

“I’m not disagreeing with you,” he said, shrugging. “I will figure it out.”

“See that you do.”

“Is that… a threat?” he asked.

“Does that surprise you?” I shot back.

“From a man with a one-percent badge and a stomach full of suspicious puncture wounds? No. No, that doesn’t surprise me. It might intrigue me a bit. And be the motivation my partners need to get off their asses and do some work around here.”

“Good. If I need to pay them each a visit, I’m more than willing to do that.”

“As much as I would love to see that,” he said, looking pleased at the very idea, “I don’t imagine it will come to that.”

“Perfect. You should get going then. You have a clinic to open in… an hour and a half,” I said after glancing at the clock.

With that, he was gone.

And I was waiting again.

Until, of course, they finally came to get me.
