“Yeah, didn’t think of that.”

“Here, man,” I said, reaching in my wallet for a hundred. “Use this to feed some mouths tonight, yeah?” I asked, slipping it under the plastic partition.

“I like that you haven’t forgot about us,” Ray said, nodding, as he tucked the money into the register.

“Never would,” I said, making my way out.

I leaned against the building, taking several long swigs of my coffee, ignoring the phone in my pocket where I was sure a pissed off Huck was waiting to speak to me.

“How’d we know we’d find you here?” Levee asked, making me turn to find him and Cato walking up, reminding me so much of old times that I suddenly felt seventeen again, hanging out at the convenience store on a Friday night, waiting for their asses to get done with whatever job they had going on, so we could make plans for the rest of the evening.

“Everything alright at the clinic?” Cato asked.

“Yeah. The nurse was shot,” I told them.

“And Amaranta?” Levee asked.

“Got knocked in the head, but is fine. Sorry I bailed. Huck’s gonna have my ass, if that makes you feel any better.”

“Can’t imagine why he would. You didn’t do jack-shit,” Cato said, shrugging.

“You can’t lie to the president,” I reminded them.

“Lie? No. But not volunteer information he doesn’t need to know? I think we could do that,” Cato said, shrugging.

“Yeah, you know Huck. He’ll ask if the job is done. And if we had any problems,” Levee piped in. “Aside from the blowjob in the van, it went smoothly.”

It was a gray area.

To be honest, I’d grown up in a gray area. I’d conducted so much personal and professional business in a gray area.

But since getting patched, I’d been trying to be on the up-and-up. With my club brothers, at least.

That said, it really wasn’t a big deal, all said and done. The job was completed. I didn’t get myself into any sort of trouble.

It was fine.

“So, are we gonna go party, or what?” Levee asked, rolling back on his heels, clearly already on the strip in Miami, hopping bars with Teddy, Alaric, Donovan, and Eddie.

I didn’t want to party.

I damn sure didn’t want to find a random woman to fuck, not after spending time with the only one in the world I actually gave a shit about.

But I could use a drink.

Or ten.

Whatever it would take to numb that old, familiar sting a bit.

“Yeah, let’s go.”

CHAPTER THREE

Amaranta

He was the last person in the world I expected to see.

I mean, I’d have been less surprised to have looked up and seen the Pope standing there.
