I should have known better.

I should have seen that my words could hurt him.

Seeley’s biggest strength, at times, was his worst enemy. If you were so calm and collected and stoic all the time, people never saw that they were capable of hurting you.

I should have known.

If anyone should have, it was me.

And now, what, we’d just ripped each other open again for no freaking reason.

All for nothing.

Yeah, I needed to get back to work.

I needed to shut up my mind and aching heart.

“I’ll fucking hire another nurse to follow you around if I need to,” Christian said.

“Okay. That works.”

“So you’ll come? Tonight?” he added, and I could see the bags under his eyes that said he’d probably never worked this hard in his whole career.

And while I did think it was probably good for him, I had to empathize as well.

“Sure. I will catch a nap then make my way in.”

“You’re going to get a raise,” he insisted.

“That would be nice. It would also be nice if the place was funded fully.”

“Don’t push it,” he said, smirking. “My partners aren’t nearly as good of men as I am.”

“That is very, very sad,” I said, laughing. “Since we both know you’re not that good.”

“I know, right?” Christian said, handing me back my cup, then making his way to the door. “Because a good man might ask why it looks like you’ve been crying for three days straight.”

“Right,” I said, nodding, surprised he’d noticed. “But since you’re not a good man…”

“I will selfishly pretend not to notice,” he said, giving me a wink before making his way out.

When I took my nap, I did it with ice on my eyes to try to reduce the swelling.

It helped.

Marginally.

Getting myself together with the cast on was frustrating, especially trying to tie up my hair, but I did my best and it wasn’t like the patients were going to judge me anyway.

My first shift back went about as planned.

Annoying, since I couldn’t do everything I needed to, but with help from Michael, I managed.

Exhaustion was weighing on my every last nerve as Michael and I organized for the next day.

“Oh, come on,” I grumbled quietly when I heard the chime of the door opening just two minutes before we were going to lock it for the night.

“I will see, oh, huh, okay,” Michael said, making my brows scrunch as I looked up. “It’s for you,” Michael said.
