His lips pulled back lazily. “That’s my girl.”

His words came out slurred, so I reached into the bag the nurse gave him, and pulled out his box of painkillers. Quickly, I peered inside and there were two pills missing from one of the blister packs. “Did you take some of these?” I shook the box in his face to get his attention.

Braden’s smile widened. “Maybe. It’s been a tragic fucking day. I lost my bike and my phone.”

I patted his thigh. “We’ll get you a new phone tomorrow. However, your bike will not be easy to replace.”

He rested a hand on top of mine. “I’m going to miss it.”

I knew he would; he loved his motorcycle. When we arrived at his house, I helped him out of the car and wrapped an arm around his waist to guide him inside.

“Is it bad that I’m milking this for all I can?”

Braden handed me his house keys, and I unlocked the door. “What do you mean?” I asked.

He held me tighter as I led him inside. “This,” he said, waving between us, “I like you taking care of me.”

I snorted. “Don’t get used to it.” I shut the door and locked it behind me. Braden took my hand and led me down the hallway to his bedroom. “What are you doing?”

“Going to bed, and you’re coming with me.”

“And what do you plan on doing with me in your bedroom?” I wondered. It was only a matter of time before he passed out. Braden stumbled into his room and pulled me down onto the bed. He lay on his back while I rested against his chest, his fingers tickling my arm. “It’s a little early to be going to bed, isn’t it? I haven’t had dinner yet.”

Braden’s breathing started to slow. “There’s plenty to eat in the kitchen.”

My stomach growled. “I might have to raid your refrigerator.”

He chuckled, deep and slow. “I don’t mind.”

I stayed with him for a few more minutes until he fell asleep. I couldn’t imagine what all he went through today. I didn’t want to think of what life would be like if I’d lost him. The thought terrified me. He needed to know how I felt, and I was going to tell him as soon as he wasn’t doped up on pain pills.

Slowly, I slid out of Braden’s grasp and rolled off the bed. When I got to the bedroom door, his voice halted me. “What took you so long to come to the hospital?” His head tilted to the side, and he pinned me with his emerald gaze.

“I had to train Annika today,” I said.

“Where? Carter said you weren’t at the gym.”

I didn’t want to tell him the truth. “At a different location,” I answered, hoping he wouldn’t prod further. “I think it’s best Annika stays away from you.”

Braden rolled over on his side and smiled. “Jealous?”

“A little,” I confessed. “I’m trying to train her, not beat her senseless. And that’s exactly what I’ll do if she keeps flirting with you.”

“Why did it take so long for you to admit that?”

Leaning against the doorframe, I folded my arms over my chest. “Maybe I shouldn’t have. There are too many complications if this goes sideways.”

Braden huffed out slowly, his eyes closing. “You can’t worry about that, sunshine.”

But I do.He drifted off to sleep and I closed the door, wondering what tomorrow would bring. Would Braden remember anything that was said? Guess we’d find out. I walked down the hallway to the kitchen, and before I could open the refrigerator, my phone rang. It was Annika.

“Hey,” I said.

“Hey, girl. I’m trying to get in touch with Braden, but he’s ignoring my calls and texts.”

“That’s because he’s been in an accident,” I informed her.

She gasped. “What? Oh my God, is he okay?”
