“Yikes.” She grimaces.

“Yeah.”

“It’s still amazing he opened to you. We’ve tried to make sure he knew we were a safe place to talk, but he’s remained pretty closed-lipped. I think his time with the boys is a break from what’s going on at home.”

Curiosity eats at me. “Were they having problems, Fey?”

“You never really know what goes on behind closed doors, but outside looking in, they were the perfect family. Photo postcards every Christmas, always smiling and present for the town events. She never complained about him outside the usual; these small things get on my nerves. I think he was just as shocked as everyone else.”

“My mom said he had a hard time at first.”

“Understatement. New shut down and went on an endless bender. We were worried. Henry reached out, but he was stonewalled.”

“I don’t want to feel bad for him, Fey.”

“You’re not cold-blooded. You can feel sorrow for New’s situation and anger for the other. Which I’m still waiting for the full story on.” She lifts an eyebrow, and I shake my head.

“Why do you always say that?”

“Your venom is too toxic for normal ghosting.”

“You know how I felt about him.”

“Are you sure that’s felt in the past tense?”

“Don’t do that?”

“I will always have your back and support you, but the energy between you is still electric. Why else would you have fireworks just from talking to each other?”

“Because we have bad blood.”

She hums, and I grit my teeth. “Don’t do that.”

“So, you’ll be okay when he comes and picks his son up tonight?”

“What?” I look around, expecting to see the dark-haired Greek god striding toward me at any moment.

“They have a family gathering tonight.” Fey smiles. “But that’s not a problem for you, is it?”

“No.” I clear my throat. “I can be cordial if he can be.” She purses her lips, and I scowl. “He’s just picking him up, not joining us for the rest of the weekend.”

“I know. But I thought you might want to pass along what Brax had to say.”

“And I will.”

“I’m glad we sorted that out because he’s here.”

“What? “I splutter and turn sideways. Watching him walk towards us in a pair of gray sweat pants and a navy Henley, I struggle to school my facial features. The setting sun turns his tan skin into an edible golden brown that makes me think of caramel sauce. His jaw would put models to shame, and his eyes are turned into gems by the sun.

“Hey, New.” Fey waves, and he smiles. The flash of white threatens to weaken my knees. After all this time, the bastard can still pull a visceral response from me. Swallowing, I rock back onto my heels and strike a defensive position. Folding my hands across my chest, I wait for him to arrive.

“Hey, Fey. Thanks for letting Brax hang out this weekend.”

“You know he’s always welcome. It gives the boys a break from each other.”

He grins. “Those three will be a force to be reckoned with when they’re in high school.”

“Don’t I know it.” Fey laughs. “I’ll go make sure he has his things together.”
