He shook his head. “This is the story so far. I mean, Will’s still denying parts of it. But it seems two billion dollars, which was transferred that same night, the police tech unit discovered, was the major motive for the crime.”

“Will got that cash? And he still wanted more from the family?”

Declan flipped the ball in the air. “Once the private account where the funds were transferred is located, he’ll no longer have it, I hope. That’s the problem—it came from a hidden Swiss account, and Will, who’s denying having the money, has obviously managed to hide it.”

I nodded. “Okay. So Will killed Father?”

“Not according to Will. There was one other involved. Will recruited Colin and this mysterious assailant, who was employed to hack our father’s Swiss account. Both Will and Colin suggested that this hacker must have murdered our father.”

“Was Will there?” I asked.

“Apparently not. Will knew of Colin’s professional arrangement with our father and that Colin was in debt to his eyeballs. So he offered him two million pounds to be part of this elaborate plot to rob our father. Colin’s conscience got the better of him, and during a night of heavy drinking, he told a stranger at a bar what he’d done. That person then immediately informed the police. Now, Will’s behind bars for the manslaughter of our father.”

“Only manslaughter?” I asked.

He shrugged. “They’re yet to find this mysterious second person. Will is the mastermind of a crime that resulted in our father’s death.”

“Then he’s a murderer.”

“There’s no DNA linking him to the crime scene. And all records with the professional hit man have been scrubbed.”

“But he arranged the hit.”

“According to Will, that was never the plan. This hacker was meant to get into the computer while our father slept. But he needed our father’s thumbprint. That’s where the drug came into it.”

I nodded slowly.

“Colin was instructed to drug our father. Will must have known of our dad’s prescription, or it could have just been a fluke that he drugged him with Rohypnol.”

He paused for a breath. “Anyway, Colin treated it like a normal visit—hence the sex—then drugged him and left the door unlatched. From there, entered the assailant. If it had gone to plan, our father would have woken to discover he’d been hacked. Being a hidden account, he couldn’t have done anything about it. That was the wisdom. However, Father must have woken while having his thumbprint taken and struggled with the assailant, and well, you know the rest. The transaction still took place after that.”

I scratched my jaw. “But wouldn’t there be CCTV footage of the hacker?”

“The cameras in the hallway and at the entrance were turned off at that time.”

“Then the cops should be able to find this hacker-stroke-murderer via Will’s computer.”

“Like the police already suspected, he’s not going to be easy to find. According to Will, he never met the hacker in person. The job was arranged via the dark web.”

I shook my head. “Shit. What’s Bethany’s part in this?”

“They have her communicating with Will. She didn’t cover her tracks, and via phone records, they were able to learn about the plot. In parts.”

“So she’ll be charged with conspiring?” I asked.

He nodded slowly. “Probably.”

He rose. “Enough for now. It’s your wedding day. Let’s not talk about this again until another time when hopefully more will come to light.”

“I’m not sure I like the idea of Manon being here.”

“I just ran into her. She was bossing Janet around. She’s moved in.”

“You’re kidding. I didn’t know that. That means she’ll be at my wedding.”

“She’s our niece,” Declan said.

I added some product in my hair and combed it up high. “Why do you think Mother’s asked her to stay?”
