“Oh, that’s the guy?” Savanah frowned. “And you’re okay with her inviting him?”

I shrugged. “I’m not a complete stranger to some of the girls here.”

Savanah laughed. “That’s right—you had a thing for farmers’ daughters. They’re all here. It’s quite a turnout. When’s the band arriving?”

I glanced at my watch. “At eight. Dinner first. A string quartet. All nice and quaint, and then the party.”

“Should be a hoot. I would have preferred a DJ, though.”

I waved at an old friend who’d caught my eye. “I’m told the band covers all the favourite dance tunes.”

Savanah kept gawking at Orson. Wearing an outlandish burgundy suit, he looked like he’d fallen out of a 70sRolling Stonesarticle.

“Hey, he’s flirting with her, I think. And Mummy’s smiling. I think she likes him. He is kinda hot in that sexy-daddy kinda way.”

I shook my head. My sister and her labels. “Well, at least he wasn’t Cian’s daddy. That’s what counts.”

“But it would be too weird if he hooked up with Mother, wouldn’t it?”

“They’re only chatting, Sav.”

“Mm… but he’s got stars in his eyes.”

“Our mother’s a stunning woman.”

“She’s also filthy rich and very single,” Savanah said.

We glanced over, and some younger men, who’d obviously heard about our mother’s newfound solo status, hovered about her.

“And the wolves are circling.” Savanah chuckled.

“More like pups,” I added.

“She’s the veritable cougar. But Orson looks around her age.”

“Mm…” I didn’t like the idea of him flirting with my mother, knowing that he normally went for girls half his age.

Savanah tipped her head towards Manon. “She seems to have settled in.”

Manon wore a short, tight little number more suited to clubbing than a wedding.

“Mummy let her keep the money. I thought that was wrong.”

“Why am I getting the feeling you’re being all territorial all of a sudden?”

“I’m not,” Savanah appealed. “It’s just weird that she’s let her into our inner sanctum so easily.”

“At least, Mum didn’t invite Crisp,” I said.

“He’ll be back for his prize, I bet.”

“You really think Mother would sit back and allow him to seduce her granddaughter?”

Savanah shrugged. “Maybe not.”

Declan joined us with Theadora.

“Hey, you look like you’re about to pop,” Savanah said to Theadora.
