“You’re just being elitist.” I headed for the door. “I have to go to a meeting at the spa.”

“You haven’t heard the last of it,” she said waving a pen in the air.

I smiled sweetly, and just as I was leaving, Declan arrived, looking dark. I touched his shoulder. “Are you all right?”

He shook his head while glaring at our expressionless mother. “He didn’t do it.” Declan leaned on her desk. “He’s been falsely accused.”

“Then let the police decide,” she responded coldly.

I remained at the door, only because I wanted to speak to Declan, but I could see he was about to explode. That boot camp meant the world to him.

“The boys have been sent away.” His voice trembled.

“Good. Then I can sleep comfortably again. I saw a tattooed brute loitering around the pool the other night and was too frightened to even step out of my own house.”

“That’s Dusty,” I said. “Savvie’s new boy.”

Declan pointed. “See. Nothing to do with the boot camp. It wasn’t Billy. How the hell would he have gotten into your bedroom? You’re always here.”

She stonewalled him with silence, and he stormed out.

I followed him. “So all the boys have been sent away?”

“Nope. Drake’s running the gym. And there are three boys on Newman’s farm, helping the builders, as arranged.”

“I’m sorry for Billy. He seemed like a good kid,” I said.

Declan nodded. “They’re all good kids. They just needed some direction. This is bullshit.” He shook his head.

I patted him on the shoulder. “Whatever I can do. Just let me know.”

He nodded. “Thanks.”

The new maid entered the front room, and I turned to acknowledge her. “Declan this is Bethany. She’s new here.”

She nodded without a smile.

He smiled at her before turning back to me. “I’m off, then. Come over later for dinner. Bring Mirabel if you like.”

That suggestion took me by surprise. “You’ve heard that we’re seeing each other?”

“Theadora mentioned something.”

I nodded slowly as I processed this new situation in my life. I was seeing Mirabel. This was family, and I liked the idea of us being seen together. “Mother’s fuming.”

Declan rolled his eyes. “I bet. Not just one son, but both. And Savvie’s not exactly hanging out with royalty.”

I chuckled. “Catch you later, then.”

After Declan left, I approached Bethany as she wiped down a gilded oval mirror. “I hear your daughter is training to be a beautician.”

“Yes, she is.” Her eyes narrowed slightly.

“I’m opening a spa in eight weeks. We’re recruiting. If you like, I can give you the details for her to apply.”

Her cool eyes warmed slightly. “That would be good.”

“Is she in London?”
